Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Bliss, a knitwear designer and prolific knitting-book author, here combines clear lessons in learning how to knit with appealing projects for baby sweaters and accessories. Bliss's aesthetic-a hybrid of English simplicity and the casual BabyGap style she helped to create-will be well known to experienced knitters, as well as to fashion-conscious folks itching to knit something sweet and simple for their favorite baby. Bliss carefully lays out instructions for knitting, and includes sketches illustrating needle positions and techniques for each step. She also provides handy information for beginners on choosing yarn and tools and reading patterns. The 15 adorable projects include two scarves, a blanket, seed-stitch shoes, a simple hat and several sweaters of varying degrees of difficulty, culminating in a classic V-neck sweater with pockets. Most designs are sized for newborns to 12 months, though some begin at 3-6 months or end at 36 months. This inconsistency and Bliss's near-insistence that readers buy her (expensive) line of yarns, used exclusively in this book, chafe slightly. Overlooking these snags, though, beginning knitters will be pleased with a finely photographed, straightforward instruction book. 90 color photos and illustrations.

From Booklist

It's well known that the impending arrival of a baby leads many people to dream of handcrafting wonderful whimsicals. Master UK knitter and author Bliss shrewdly capitalizes on these emotions, demonstrating exactly how even rank beginners can knit simple garments for 3- to 24-month-old children. Far different from her Baby Knits Book (2003), this concentrates on 15 projects graduated either in terms of technique or in level of difficulty. Photography is magazine-lush and close-up enough for readers to pick out individual stitches; the illustrations, too, provide easy-to-understand accompaniments to very straightforward directions. The patterns are classic silhouettes that allow for colorful interpretation or elegant monochromatic hues: a garter-stitch scarf, cushions with buttonholes, two-needle socks, a V-neck sweater with pockets. What the best-dressed tot and toddler could wear. Barbara Jacobs

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally no more lacy, frilly baby knits!, April 30 2004
By Christine (Burlington, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
I've gotten to that time in my life where everyone around me is having babies. I bought this book so that I could have a variety of things to choose from. I've made the boatneck sweater and the raglan cardigan with excellent results! They look very special and very professional, especially when made with the recommended yarn. Yes, it is more expensive, but in most cases you only require 3 or so skeins. So much of what is available for babies is so frilly and fussy. These patterns are much more "trendy" - like a smaller version of what an adult would wear. I made the boatneck in a lime green that looks beautiful on my brunette niece! Be careful of pattern typos, a full erratum of all Debbie Bliss's books is available on her web site.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, But Watch Out, Feb 2 2004
By wife and mother (oklahoma city, oklahoma United States) - See all my reviews
I bought this book and knitted the v-neck cardigan for my baby. I hadn't knit in years, so I definitely considered myself a beginner. After reading through the book and then starting the sweater, I felt very comfortable with my knitting project. Once I started the V-neck sweater, I noticed something wrong with the pattern directions for the v-neck sweater. It didn't make sense. It called for size 6 knitting needles for the whole project (including the contrasting trim), except for on one of the front pieces (it called for size 5). You'd have to read the pattern to know what I mean. I called several knitting shops to ask them about the strange direction, and they told me it must be printed incorrectly. I ended up knitting the whole sweater in size 6 and it turned out fine. Also, I used the Debbie Bliss Double Cotton yarn like the pattern called for. When I washed the sweater the first time, the contrasting color bled a little onto the rest of the sweater. That was quite a disappointment. Bottom line...I loved the book, but be careful when reading directions, I'm not sure how accurate they are.

3.0 out of 5 stars beautiful designs, not so clear instruction, Jul 13 2004
By New Mom (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I love the designs and suggested colors of all the projects by Debbie Bliss. However, her instructions are not very clear for a beginner book, and I found myself consulting more advanced knitters many times for clarification. The book would be greatly improved with more pictures or diagrams of projects broken down; in other words, what each piece should look like before their sewn together. Also, there are a couple projects that involved supplies that were not listed. I found out mid-project that I needed stitch holders (first I had to find out what stitch holders were!). I had never knitted before trying the projects from this book, and would not recommend it to a first-timer like myself who is learning the basic skills. However, I love her designs and her projects are so beautiful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Congratulations, almost
Well, these are not recycled designs, and the needles are larger than normal for her. But this is not a book for beginners. There are problems with clarity of instruction. Read more
