Book Description

The 10-Minute Retriever reflects the authors' belief that daily ten-minute training sessions best suit a retriever's attention span and lead to rapid learning. This book is easy to use for the absolute beginner and yet deeply informative for the serious student of retriever training. The text has the information most needed by the owner of a pet retriever: how to make it reliable obedient and well-mannered. It also has the information for which amateur retriever trainers are clamoring: how to force fetch, how to set up tests in the field, and how to use an electric collar humanely and effectively. The emphasis of their training method is on obtaining necessary control and good manners while maximizing the dog's enthusiasm for its work by establishing training situations where the dog desires to cooperate. Primary importance is placed on developing and enhancing the desire to retrieve, from early puppyhood onward. The method presented provides a solid foundation to the dog and owner continuing to advance retrieve training (blind retrieves and competition). Concepts and methods are illustrated with true dog stories. Difference between the major breeds are described and adaptations are given for the different breed personalities.

1.0 out of 5 stars I am absolutely sickened!, Dec 1 2002
By B. Blazer (WI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is going to be used a kindling in the fireplace. Never before have I read a book on training a dog that left me feeling as bad as this one did. Let me make perfectly clear that I am not new to dog training, nor to hunting. I have trained an Akita to UDE, and I have field trained an American Water Spaniel for upland bird hunting.

The techniques described in this book are utterly inhumane. I was actually enjoying the book until I got to their section on forced retireve. Basically the philosophy here is that you create pain and stress in the dog, and the only resolution to this unpleasantness is the retireve. There is not reward for a job well done, just the relief of pain. As you progress in the training, the more pain and stress you put on the dog.

Some of the specific things that upset me in the book are:

1) Using a switch on the dog
2) Tying a dogs moth shut around a retireving dummy
3) Ear pinch (being sure to dig your thumb nail into the uderside of the ear according to their directions).
4) "Burning" (their term) the dog with an electric shock collar (I am not agains proper use of an e-collar, I just think that "burning" is a bit far).

In a nutshell, this book explains to the trainer that in order to have a good field dog, you must completely break its spirit, and individualism. Thus creating a dog that is a machine just spending its life looking to relieve pain and stress.

I will never recomend this book to anyone. I can see by the other reviews that I am in the minority. The decision must be yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best!, Aug 19 2003
This book offers the clearest, most detailed description of not only the HOW of basic training of retrievers, but the WHY behind the techniques and the progression.

Many dog training books offer "cookbook" instructions for training a dog, but dogs are living beings, not souffle's, and often times do not follow the manual! An underlying knowledge of WHY the trainer is performing each training step is key to understanding why each step needs to be done correctly, not rushed, and not completed until the dog understands what is being asked. This book offers several different techniques and methods for working a dog through each step, and for dealing with things dogs will do when they don't "follow" the book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out training their first retriever. It's clarity and conciseness are what every person needs when starting out training dogs to retrieve. I have given this book to several friends as gifts, and recommend it personally to many.

4.0 out of 5 stars great book for the 1st time trainer, Aug 7 2003
By tim whalen (Arkansas) - See all my reviews
I just read the 10 Minute Retriever by John and Amy Dahl and found it to be very informative and educational especially for the 1st time retriever trainer, it gives in depth detail on obedience, force fetch, marking, and it gets the novice handler ready to teach hand signals, and that is the only draw back in the whole book. It also gives a recollection of dogs they have trained in the past. good easy to understand reading.
