Book Description

Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain—conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circulation and oxygenation in the area and often produces instant relief. This dynamic technique has made a huge impact among health professionals and the public alike, becoming an overnight classic in the field of pain relief. The book has sold over 145,000 copies since the release of the first edition in 2001. The second edition is a complete update and includes a new chapter specifically for massage professionals, as well as a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques that can reinforce the therapeutic power of trigger point work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good self-help tool., Sep 19 2008
I consider this book to be a useful self-help tool for treating trigger points, or irritable spots in the muscle. It has many, many pictures which help guide the reader to common places in the muscles where these things are at. From there, you can use a ball, massage them with your fingers, or even use this tool called a Thera-Cane to get to those hard to reach places.

All in all a handy book for treating trigger points, another good lesson here is that sometimes muscle trigger points can mimick more serious ailments, when the problem is really just in the muscle. Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if you suffer from plantar fasciitis pain.

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked where others failed, Jul 29 2008
Fellow readers, two words for you: BUY IT.

I'm a geek by trade. Although (mostly) retired now, I still do spend a lot of time at the computer. My posture was never perfect and ergonomics were not my strong suit either.
Over the years I have developed a multitude of "painful places" as I call them, lower back issues, shoulder pain, neck pain and the good ol' carpal tunnel syndrome as well.

I have gone to many massage therapy sessions, have been prescribed powerful NSAIDs and painkillers, have even done Qigong, acupuncture, acupressure, and various exercises. Although I have had some temporary pain relief, none of these approaches created a lasting, pain-free body.

Having basically nothing to lose, I have bought this book and, boy, am I glad I did! I've read the portion covering the carpal tunnel syndrome, borrowed a rubber ball from my dog, and went to work on these trigger points. That night, for the first time in many years I have had a good night's sleep and did not wake up with excruciating arm pain and numb fingers! I have been massaging these trigger points for about 5 minutes, once a day, and the carpal tunnel problem has not bothered me since.
I have also started "treating" other trigger points' locations and the results are pretty amazing.

This book addresses the root causes of many common body aches and pains that plague millions of people every day. In this book I found answers that doctors were not giving me (I guess it's more profitable to just write a prescription that teach the patient a little self-help technique).
I am a living, breathing, and now almost pain-free proof that this book is well worth investing in!

For those of you who are visual learners, this book is for you. It shows pictures of exact trigger point locations while explaining, in layman's terms, what is happening in your body and how self-treatment of these trigger points relieve pain. A wonderful book for anyone who is looking for pain relief.
