Product Description

From Library Journal

Hard on the heels of Fuller Torrey and Michael B. Knable's excellent Surviving Manic Depression: A Manual on Bipolar Disorder for Patients, Families and Providers (LJ 1/02) comes another strong title. Both books cover the origins, symptoms, and treatments for bipolar disorder, with emphasis on current medications. The main difference between the two books is that the current title by Miklowitz (psychology, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) is intended for patients. It spends a good deal of time on issues exclusive to the sufferer how to come to terms with the diagnosis, whom to confide in, and how to recognize one's own mood swings. More concise in its treatment of the issues just mentioned, Torrey and Knable's title is addressed to a more general audience, spends more time reviewing the scientific evidence concerning the origins of the disease, and has a much more useful resource list. On the whole, Surviving Manic Depression would be the first choice for most libraries, with Miklowitz's book recommended for patient education libraries and medium and large public libraries. Review

'A practical, straightforward book that will be a great help to those who have bipolar illness, as well as their families.' - Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD, author of An Unquiet Mind; 'Dr. Miklowitz's book is both impressive and very humane... This book should be required reading for people with the disorder, their family members, and the physicians and therapists who treat them.' - Demitri F. Papolos, MD, and Janice Papolos, authors of Overcoming Depression and The Bipolar Child; 'Dr. Miklowitz's pioneering research has proven that education about bipolar disorder and its treatment can actually affect the course of the illness, even though it stems from biological causes. This authoritative, eminently readable book provides just the right tools for patients and families seeking to lessen the impact of this disorder on their lives.' - Frederick K. Goodwin, MD, George Washington University Medical Center

5.0 out of 5 stars for ever-doubtful bipolars and their aggravated families, May 22 2003
By "wildeyedchildofthesun" (Woodbridge, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This book is excellent for people who *are* bipolar or have family members that are. Unlike so many books on the disorder, this one doesn't 1. solely spit up another DSM-IV hairball to describe the complexities of the actual *bipolar experience*, or 2. present a narrow viewpoint of how symptoms may manifest themselves. It made me chuckle as I read it, because it addresses the sometimes downright *silly* defiance a person can feel towards their diagnosis, and hopefully explains some of what's really going on inside a bipolar person's head to family members or people they might live with. The section on meds is still pretty updated, which is cool, and I like the fact that they mention some of the slightly less conventional means of dealing with cycling and depression--like thyroid supplementation--that some other books leave out. It also adequately discusses (I think, anyway) Bipolar II and the soft-spectrum versions of the disorder.

This book isn't the one to read if you're strictly reading it for research purposes--you'll find more scientifically-orientated articles on medscape--but I think I'd recommend it as the first book to run out and get if you're diagnosed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not bi . . . but . . ., Aug 13 2004
By A Customer
First of all, I want to preface what I'm going to say with this: I don't have bi-polar disorder. The reason I'm saying this is that I have the fortunate ability to see things from the "outside" and all I can say is, of all the mental illnesses and "problems" one could have, bi-polar is probably the most difficult and frustrating. This is because it is the least understood and least tolerated of all the illnesses. Thank God we have this book to help those who not only suffer from the illness, but the families of those suffering. Recently I've read everything I could get my hands on, in an effort to understand a family member's problems--one of which is bi-polar disorder--and as a result have come across several excellent reads. They are as follows:

A Brilliant Madness
Prozac Nation
Sybil
The Bark of the Dogwood
When Someone You Lovfe has Mental Illness

All are excellent and informative and I would highly recommend them to you if you're either going through something such as this, or if you're a family member trying to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to share with Family Members, Aug 18 2003
By A Customer
As someone struggling with Bipolar Disorder for the past three years, I must say the hardest struggle is getting those around me to understand what I'm going through. While they are supportive - they just don't really "get it". This is a book that's been passed to my husband, my mother, my father, and some other relatives as I try to help them understand the illness so they can be even more supportive. This book really fills the need for information they have. Much recommended!!
