Review

"Edited by leading clinical researchers, this timely text presents authoritative reviews of the most effective treatments for PTSD. Systematic and constructively critical reviews of current evidence are presented, and clear practice guidelines are described. The text is essential reading for all clinicians and researchers serving clients with PTSD. Graduate students in many disciplines will find this a helpful guide through the concepts, critical issues, and future key directions in the field." --William Yule, PhD, Professor of Applied Child Psychology, University of London Institute of Psychiatry, UK

"In a field characterized by sometimes outlandish claims of miracle cures, it is good to have a book that is marked by careful analysis, sound research, and clear-headed thinking. This is 'must' reading for clinicians and researchers alike, and will also be invaluable in educational and training settings." --Gerald C. Davison, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Southern California

"Studies indicate that nearly 9% of the United States population will experience the serious syndrome of PTSD at some point in their lives. Accordingly, knowledge of what works and what doesn't work to help people with PTSD recover is essential to the practicing mental health clinician. Foa, Keane, and Friedman have brought together leading experts to provide the first comprehensive set of guidelines regarding treatment of this disorder. Based on the best available scientific evidence, recommendations are appropriately qualified by clinical experience and the limitations of the research studies. This volume sets a new standard for practice guidelines. It will likely become the 'bible' for clinicians and investigators who seek information on PTSD treatment, as well as for graduate-level courses in psychotherapy, trauma, and mental health services." --Paul Crits-Christoph, PhD, Director, Center for Psychotherapy Research; Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania

"This book effectively guides the clinician in making treatment decisions for patients with PTSD....the volume is a collaboratively effort of experts in the various treatment modalities. A number of different treatments are covered....contributors presents a full description of each treatment, including theoretical considerations and review of the supporting clinical and experimental literature. This comprehensive review may be the book's greatest strength. The studies and their results are well summarized, and in some chapters they are given in chart form....the book is a valuable reference for clinicians in all mental health disciplines seeking additional insight into how to treat this population more effectively."--Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic

"For some books, time must catch up to their need. Others are enduring classics. This volume fits both descriptions....The introductory chapters by the editor are classics. They warrant the publication of this book regardless of the rest of the volume....The editors are leaders in their field and bring the clinician as well as the scholar up-to-date through their presentations....This contribution of Foa, Keane, and Friedman is an important addition to both clinicians' and researchers' libraries."--American Journal of Psychiatry

"...the field is greatly enriched by this important book....the book provides an important handbook for practitioners to make the all-important decision: What treatment for which client at which point in their recovery process? Traumatologists now have a vital resource for reviewing the available literature on their treatment approach of choice and investigating others that appear to be a reasonable choice for their clients."--Journal of Trauma Practice

"...this book is well written for mental health professionals from any discipline working with patients suffering from PTSD, and would be of interest to both clinicians and researchers. The authors and editors have written a comprehensive and excellent overview of a field that has grown tremendously over the last few decades. It provides a systematic framework to help clinicians. This book can serve as an important resource for all clinicians treating patients with PTSD."--Psychiatry

"This text is very helpful in orienting the clinician to the types of treatment available for PTSD and the research based usefulness of associated interventions....a significant contribution to the promotion of high standards of care for patients suffering from PTSD."--Journal of Psychology and Christianity

"...a landmark publication....The book, edited by three international experts on traumatic stress, brings together leading clinical scientists to offer 'best practice guidelines' for the treatment of PTSD--for adults, and for children and adolescents....There is no doubt at all that this is the best book a student or clinical practitioner can turn to, for advice on the treatment of PTSD."--International Review of Psychiatry

"This book, edited by three leading figures in the trauma field, is very welcome....It brings together established clinicians in this field to offer ¿best practice guidelines'. All the main treatment modalities are described, analysed and evaluated....Nothing in the literature up to now betters, or even equals, this volume as a sound, evidence-based guide to the treatment of traumatic stress. It is excellent in content, and is extremely well edited. A must for the libraries of clinicians dealing with trauma one way or another in their work. There is no doubt it will be very widely used."--Sexual and Relationship Therapy

"This concise book provides both an excellent summary of the state-of-the-art in PTSD treatment and a lucid evaluation of the professional literature documenting the efficacy of those treatments. It will serve as a useful guide for researchers, clinicians, and students who are appropriately perplexed by the continuing challenges of this field....Among the many strengths of this work is the clarity of its organization and the high editorial and literary standards maintained across its twenty-seven chapters, each with an excellent bibliography....In short, this is likely to become a benchmark volume in the field of traumatic stress studies, which I hope will be utilized by all those interested in this subject, and which should be the first of many, periodically updated future editions."--American Journal of Psychotherapy

Product Description

Developed under the auspices of the PTSD Treatment Guidelines Task Force of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, this comprehensive volume offers best practice guidelines for the treatment of PTSD. The book represents the collaborative work of experts across a range of theoretical orientations and professional backgrounds. After addressing general treatment considerations and methodological issues, chapters review and evaluate the salient literature on treatment approaches for children, adolescents, and adults. Approaches covered include acute interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, EMDR, group therapy, psychodynamic therapy, inpatient treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation, hypnotherapy, marital and family treatment, and creative therapies. Standardized ratings are provided of each modality's efficacy for reducing core symptoms, and therapeutic goals, methods, and treatment planning recommendations are summarized. Synthesizing a vast body of knowledge into a cohesive, practical framework, this volume will be the definitive resource for all clinicians and researchers working in the area of PTSD.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A good introduction, Oct. 16 2003
Par Un client
As the field of psychological trauma treatment matures, this book fills a need to provide a broad overview of where it is. It might be argued that the editors' investment in one of the therapies discussed in the book (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) colors their presentation and leads to the neglect of other therapies, both established (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and promising (Cognitive Therapy), this is not a major flaw as the individual chapters are written by individuals with some knowledge of their subject areas. Nonetheless, given the ongoing research being conducted on treating PTSD, researchers should bear in mind that this book will likely need revisions within the next year or two to be truly accurate.

This is a good book for people who want to know more about PTSD. It does not contain psycho bubble, but is rather written in clear coherent professional English. It offers a variety of effective treatments which are backed by current research and literature.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Effective Treatments for PTSD, Déc 6 2000
Par Un client
I highly recommend this book for any professional who counsels people who have post traumatic stress disorder. The treatment guidelines are excellent, and the review of the literature that backs up the selection of the guidelines clearly guides the reader step by step to a better understanding of what treatment approaches are currently backed up by existing research and which are not.
