Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Former dancer Freydont draws on her own professional experience in a solid debut that revolves areound the intrigues of a dance troupe. Lindy Haggerty left her successful dance career behind to raise a family in suburban New Jersey. Now the kids are out of the house, her husband's career has taken off and she's considering what to do next. Out of the blue, her former roommate, Biddy McFee, whom she hasn't seen in 10 years and who is now rehearsal director of the Jeremy Ash Dance Company, invites her to the company's opening performance. The reason for the urgency Lindy senses in Biddy's voice is all too evident when she arrives at the theater to find Biddy on crutches and poisonous backstage atmosphere. Freydont quickly sets her principals in place: Peter Dowd, the once-handsome and now strangely gaunt stage manager; Charlotta Devine, the diva from hell; young and gifted Andrea Martin; Alice Phelps, the costume mistress; the gorgeous Ash himself. Lindy's fears are confirmed when a batten falls from the wings and hits Andrea during the curtain call for Act One. Then Carlotta makes a monstrous scene backstage. In over her head, Biddy asks Lindy to assist her for a few days. On tour and working toward their New York opening, Biddy and Lindy are immersed in management and financial problems, which reach crisis proportions when the devious Carlotta is found murdered on her dressing-room floor. While some elements, such as the possibility of another man in Lindy's life, are too pat, Freydont tells a good story, keeps the reader guessing and sets the stage for a return engagement. (Oct.)

From Library Journal

Lindy Haggerty pirouettes at a chance to reenter the exciting world of dance she left for a husband and family. Long-time friend Arabida McFee, now rehearsal director for a touring dance company, has asked her help in investigating some sabotage-type accidents during crucial dance rehearsals. Lindy subs with aplomb, finesses an aging and nasty diva, sniffs out financial irregularities, peers into a years-old possible attempted murder, then identifies a current murderer. Written by a former dancer, this new mystery offers a pleasant behind-the-scenes look at the world of dance, accompanied by a diversity of dancers, conflicts of character, and a leavening of humor. Recommended for most collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deserves a curtain call, Oct 10 2000
By algerina "algerina" (Saint Paul, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Backstage Murder (Paperback)
I love theatrical murders and this is delightful. The author did a great job of describing the backstage bickering and pressures. The characters are well developed. Lindy Haggerty is suffering from an empty nest when an offer to get back into show business arrives in the form of her old friend. She joins the dance company only to find a Diva from hell causing trouble for everyone. I liked the light touch of romance. The clues and red herrings were spread about in a minefield of misdirection. If I had one complaint it is that Ms Freydont took so long to kill the victim. I was so annoyed by the character I was ready to do it myself. This book is a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a can't put it down mystery, Aug 19 2000
By "gogreens" (Palm Bay, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Backstage Murder (Paperback)
I would suggest that you delay starting this book if you have anything else that requires your attention. If you have forgotten your college "all nighters" this book will bring it back to you. I have not seen this many suspects and red herrings since reading my last Benni Harper mystery. Lindy Haggerty is a worthy addition to the new group of thinking lady detectives. I am looking forward to the next visit from Lindy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Backstage Murder, Mar 19 2000
"Touring" with Lindy Haggerty and sharing her adventures was great fun! Having always enjoyed dance, but being stuck with two left feet, reading Backstage Murder gave me a peek at a world I'd never have a chance to know. Having a murder and great characters as part of the ingredients made Backstage Murder a terrific read!
