Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Somewhere between Valerie Solanas's bitter SCUM Manifesto and Eve Ensler's fanciful The Vagina Monologues lies this self-indulgent exercise in feminist reclamation. Striving to remove the negative connotations from a word usually used as a scathing insult, Muscio traces the history of the term "cunt" and asserts that it was once a term of respect before the patriarchy turned it into a profane, misogynistic epithet. This transformation, she insists, occurred as part of a conspiracy to make women feel a sense of self-loathing and uncleanness; only by reconnecting with love for their genitalia can women achieve personal and political power. Muscio muddles her work with rambling digressions, including those about utilizing sea sponges instead of tampons during menstruation, using herbal tea and visualization in order to miscarry an unwanted fetus and identifying with Imelda Marcos. What insights the book does provide must be discerned beneath Musico's jarring prose, which fluctuates between the academic and the colloquial, sometimes in the same paragraph. On responses to her manuscript, she writes, "Reactions to a book called Cunt always lead to an intense grilling. Ain't never encountered ambivalence." Although this work may constitute a move toward women's acceptance of themselves and their bodies, it is a very small step. Agent, Leigh Feldman.

Product Description

An ancient title of respect for women, the word "cunt" long ago veered off this noble path. Inga Muscio traces the road from honor to expletive, giving women the motivation and tools to claim "cunt" as a positive and powerful force in their lives. In this fully revised edition, she explores, with candidness and humor, such traditional feminist issues as birth control, sexuality, jealousy between women, and prostitution with a fresh attitude for a new generation of women. Sending out a call for every woman to be the Cuntlovin' Ruler of Her Sexual Universe, Muscio stands convention on its head by embracing all things cunt-related. This edition is fully revised with updated resources, a new foreword from sexual pioneer Betty Dodson, and a new afterword by the author. "Bright, sharp, empowering, long-lasting, useful, sexy..."San Francisco Chronicle "...Cunt provides fertile ground for psychological growth. "San Francisco Bay Guardian "Cunt does for feminism what smoothies did for high-fiber dietsit reinvents the oft-indigestible into something sweet and delicious. "Bust Magazine"

5.0 out of 5 stars a life-changing book, Oct 19 2002
By Dreamsylvania (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
I'm a feminist in the sense that I want women and men to have equal rights, but I've never realized how insidious this culture is in propagating subtly misogynistic messages. This book is about giving women back our choices. We have a choice to use cost-effective and earth-friendly tampons and pads. We have a choice to use birth control that does not manipulate or damage our bodies. We have a choice to protect ourselves AND other women from rape. The author goes on about how oppressed Iranian women have far more love for one another than the average American woman, how in some countries genital mutilation is forced on girls, but in America we PAY to mutilate ourselves. There's more than just women's issues, however. She gives evidence on how corporations are lying to us, how the media is lying or shading the truth, the sheer idiocy of our president, etc. I didn't used to be a very politically aware person, but this book made me realize that we NEED to know what's going on in this world. So, ladies, do yourselves a favor and read this book, and guys, read this book so you don't become one of the silly men simply because everyone else is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Written with strength, humor and love of womanhood., Mar 16 1999
By A Customer
How wonderful to read a book written by a woman, about being a woman, without the usual androcentrism of male bashing, or how to snag the man of your dreams. Muscio writes with such clarity and frankness that there is no room for self-pity. She writes frankly about some of her prior life experiences and decisions without making excuses or blaming men. Rather, she is absolutely focused on the power that she has harnessed as a result, and encourages other women to find and harness their own woman power.

The title of this book is so stark that many will, unfortunately, miss out on how beautifully and with such love that it is written. Still, it is the most powerful book that I have read in a long time. Moreover, I strongly recommend this as a resource for any sort of womens' support group or literary group. I would also recommend this for college curricula in a feminist studies or gender class (in conjunction with "Reviving Ophelia"), provided the title will not prevent it from being carried on a campus bookstore.

3.0 out of 5 stars What a rant!, Jul 9 2002
By Alice Fielding "kangarunitarian" (Norman, OK USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I liked this book. I liked this book a lot, actually. It has some terrific ideas in it. Did you ever really THINK about the issue of prostitution? What about birth control and abortion? What do you think of the idea of making sure that the guy who raped your friend is "outed" to the world? What about the very place rape has in our culture? Did you ever realize you don't have to use tampons and pads in order to keep from leaving a trail of blood around once a month? Did you ever think about a trail of blood as possibly being a GOOD thing?

Plus, Muscio gives the best quote I've ever heard about condoms. I don't know if it's original, but if it is, I'd like to shake her hand. "Men who refuse to wear condoms do not deserve to have sex with anyone except for other men who refuse to wear condoms." Hahahaha!

I have to downrate this book, though, because it's obviously just a long rant--a GOOD long rant with lots of interesting ideas, but just a rant nonetheless. It's a set of opinions that belong to one college-educated white lesbian. Some of the ideas are a little extreme. (Okay, a lot extreme.) The whole idea of menstrual cramps was concocted by the ibuprofen manufacturers? Please, if only it were that simple!

But, overall I think this is a great book to read and I do recommend it even if I don't take the whole thing seriously.
