2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Dec 23 2003
By KarenJ "Karen" (Rochester,New York, USA) - See all my reviews
I bought this book at the same time I got my first slow cooker. I was attracted to it because it seemed to contain so many different recipes. However, I have to agree with the reviewer who said that many of the recipes are essentially variations on the same idea. In addition, there are whole sections of the book that I would never even bother with--making bread in the crockpot in a 2-lb coffee can? I'd rather get a bread machine or devote a few hours on the weekend to making bread in the oven. Cookies in the slow cooker? Why would you spend time making 4 cookies at a time when you can just as easily slide a cookie sheet in the oven and have a dozen in 10 minutes?
I've also found that several of the recipes contain sloppy errors, such as calling for a "can of tomato sauce" without specifying the size. Or there are strange contradictions, such as the page containing the "tip" to always put your cut-up vegetables on the bottom of the crockpot, when the recipe on the same page tells you to do the exact opposite. There's also a "tip" telling you never to use frozen vegetables, but several recipes call for just that.
Almost everything I tried needed more liquid--even cooking on the lowest setting, the dishes were done well before the specified time.
I'm still looking for a better slow cooker cookbook--but in the meantime, I've found several tasty, reliable recipes for free on the Web.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrid recipes!!, Feb 20 2004
I'm a great cook, but I got a slow cooker thinking it'll help me on days when I don't have time to fuss with too much cooking, and so I got this book as well (without reading the other reviews).
I've tried one of the recipes; it's horrid, plain tasting and not at all appetizing looking either. I'm afraid to try the other recipes from this book and wasting the ingredients. I actually get better tasting & free recipes online for my slow cooker now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Yumminess, Dec 4 2003
By MD (Amherst, NY United States) - See all my reviews
I've had this book for about a year now and everything I've made out of it has been fabulous. The Traditional Beef Stew is my personal favorite...easy to make, tastes awesome, and ready to eat when you get home! All I have right now is a little 4-quart crock pot, and there was one recipe that I felt would have been better looking coming out of a 6-quart oval crock pot, but it was still yummy, if not pretty. But like I said before, this book is great...in fact, I'm getting it for my mom for Christmas.

As for the review of the recipes being too bland...perhaps a little something called salt and pepper? Just a thought....

I received this book as a gift and was excited to try the recipes in it. After trying more than a dozen (too many) of the recipes, I have finally given up on this book. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great
I found this book to be adequately written and produced, but just didn't like many of the recipes. I ended up copying half-a-dozen onto index cards and then giving the book to my... Read more
