From Publishers Weekly

One day, TV talk show host O'Donnell (Kids Are Punny), aka Rosie, impulsively left a phone message for a pregnant, 14-year-old girl, whose tragic story of rape she had learned about at the New Jersey adoption agency she funds. Within days, the girl, Stacie, called back. Rosie introduced herself and offered to help the girl in any way she could. "And as I said those words, it was like a shell breaking open or a bird coming out," writes O'Donnell. "I said hello and a crack came, and we all fell in, straight into looking-glass land." What follows is an enormously powerful story about the mystery of identity, about how forces strong enough to shatter one person can make another shine like a diamond. Rosie chronicles her increasingly obsessive phone and e-mail relationship with a poor, broken kid who comes to show her that beneath her gifts of humor, fame, money and even love, she is still the child who lost her mother and is calling out to her. But what makes this brief book extraordinary by any standard is that it captures the way a core self, a true I, can appear in the midst of the most broken life. In the kind of lean, clean, witty prose that comes only with complete honesty, Rosie imparts some unexpected truths. Readers will come away persuaded that the road of obsessiveness can sometimes lead to the palace of wisdom, that faith and grace are real. Those who declare this merely a sexual "coming-out" story (there are passing references to dating a woman and to Rosie's partner, Kelli) need a heart and brain transplant. Here, Rosie offers us an unsentimental and utterly real tale about the power of love. (One-day laydown, Apr. 16)

From AudioFile

FIND ME is riveting. It tells the fascinating story of the relationship that developed between O'Donnell and someone who was in desperate need of help and called her out of the blue. O'Donnell weaves her personal history through the story, exploring the emotional impact of her mother's death on her life in general and on this experience specifically. Her vulnerability seems genuine, and there are moments of stunning insight. The story is personal and intimate, and O'Donnell's reading enhances it perfectly. This may have particular appeal to those interested in codependency. E.S. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

5.0étoiles sur 5 Surprisingly Delightful, Mai 1 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Find Me (Hardcover)
I wasn't prepared for this book. Like everyone else, I thought that Rosie O'Donnell had written a cute little memoir about coming out of the closet. I thought it would be all about being a gay mother, being a gay icon, adopting kids, what have you. The book didn't even come close to that subject matter and wasn't even about O'Donnell being a lesbian. But I wasn't disappointed.

The book centres around O'Donnell and her growing relationship with a young girl named Stacie. O'Donnell writes in the introduction: "The whole world changed with just one phone call... I met Stacie for the first time in May. Her voice was meek and flat on the phone. She wasn't crying but I heard it, the unmistakable sound of desperation. That was the first call, the single call that would change my life, and hers too, probably forever."

When Rosie gets a call from a young, fourteen year old girl saying she is pregnant and the child's father is her church's minister, Rosie feels her boundaries drop. Like every mother, like every human being, she does everything she can to help this troubled child. She bends over backwards, reorganizes her life, all the for the sake of one girl.

Rosie throws away all boundaries and help Stacie, despite advice from others that Stacie and her mother and father may be taking advantage of her. Rosie brushes aside all these concerns, saying that she knows Stacie, that Stacie is hurt and afraid, needing a shoulder to lean on.

Rosie and Stacie begin to form a relationship over late night phone calls,; all the while, Rosie is facing her own demons. While she is trying to help Stacie, memories and issues from her past keep coming back up. Helping Stacie removed all the boundaries for Rosie and she has to confront her own ghosts.

Then Stacie disappears. Rosie stops hearing from Stacie, the phone number that Stacie gave her doesn't exist, and there is no Stacie, no fourteen year old, no baby. Rosie, at her wits end, is thrown into a real mystery, truth that is stranger than fiction. Even Rosie could not foresee what answers she would find once she began looking...

This is a bizarre little book. I got it from a friend of mine who knew I liked Rosie O'Donnell and started reading with glee. As I've said above, this is not a coming out book. It is a memoir about relationships, about boundaries and about the blurry line between reality and fantasy. I am haunted by this book.

What I found particularly neat about the book was that it gave us a glimpse into Rosie's mentality and it's good to know that celebrities are normal too. She discusses her compulsions and her personal issues with an unflinching grace. She is able to be honest with us about herself, and that endeared me further to her.

The book is hauntingly beautiful. I think it is because Rosie is so brutally honest. This is a worthy memoir and an excellent read, albeit a short one. You don't have to love celebrities to read this book, or even love Rosie. "Find Me" will speak to mothers, sons, anyone. Rosie has a story to tell and it's up to us to read it.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Good but..., Avril 20 2004
This review is from: Find Me (Paperback)
It a eassy and interesting book to read. Rosie is a good story teller, she make you care about the person in the book, make you want to know more about them. She relate funny and sad memories. It start good but become very confusing and very hard to believe but has life is strange sometime truth is more strange then movie and this time this story is very strange. The book left me wondering why to some questions I have. How come Melissa said she was pregnant, how could she make it beleive to Rosie. It's pretty hard to believe that Rosie had fall for all this, that story is very strange but surely can be true.

2.0étoiles sur 5 give snaps for writing but..., Avril 1 2004
This review is from: Find Me (Hardcover)
I bought the book for my ex girlfriend when it came out... I bought it from an antique shop for 5 dollars, right after it came out. That should've been a bad sign from the get-go, but i bought it anyways because my at the time girlfriend was a big a fan of Rosie.

I read it in the car on the way to Houston and it was no where close to what I expected. I was greatly disappointed. I was setup for a great book and instead of caviar, i got some bad tuna.

The book goes on and on about a girl named Stacie, and then zaps you into O'Donnell's childhood. Iit made it slightly difficult to follow.

The media set the book up as if it was a wonderful coming out story (seeing how at the time she had just recently come out of the closet), but no, the story was about Stacie.

I was very disappointed. Had the story been advertised for what it is, I probably would have enjoyed it.
