Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Kleypas has given Only in Your Arms, her first title for Avon, a makeover, and the resulting book boasts a tighter plot and richer characterizations. Set in New Orleans in the early 19th century, this atmospheric tale portrays the romance between Lysette Kersaint, a strong-willed Creole who is on the run from her abusive stepfather and an arranged marriage to a man she loathes, and Maximilien Vallerand, a notorious rake and widower who is rumored to have strangled his adulterous wife. Lysette finds protection in Max's home, but she soon learns that he plans to use her as a pawn to exact revenge against her intended, Etienne Sagesse, his sworn enemy. The tension between the two quickly heats up, but before they can find happiness together, they must settle the mysteries of Max's past. The romance between Max and Lysette is compelling, but what really sets this book apart is Kleypass ability to make the period come alive. With the ease of a skilled seamstress, Kleypas weaves in dozens of details, touching on everything from the political tensions between Mexico and the American territories to the cultural differences between Creoles and Americans. Kleypas doesn't shy away from developing her characters either. Max emerges as a tortured but admirable hero, and even secondary figures like Maxs mother and brothers take on a life of their own.

Product Description

Lysette buried her face against Max's throat. "But he's going to take me away. Don't let him, don't -- "

"You're not going anywhere," Max interrupted. "Calm yourself, Lysette. It's not good for you to become excited." His possessiveness made her strangely giddy. As far as he was concerned, she was his, and no one was going to take her away from him.

Max stared at Etienne. His voice was soft, but it contained a note that chilled Lysette's blood. "If you so much as disarrange a hair on her head, I'll tear you apart."

Lysette couldn't believe it, but she didn't care about her ruined reputation. The only thing that mattered was that she wouldn't have to marry Etienne.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of her best, May 3 2004
By "antithesis90" (Hamel, MN USA) - See all my reviews
In my opinion, this is the weakest of Kleypas's novels; it was the second novel by her that I read and made me rethink my initial attraction to the author. I found the characters to be non-engaging and the story predictable and dragging. I would recommend this novel only to a die-hard Kleypas fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better the second time around. 4.5 Stars, Feb 5 2004
By MaryGrace Meloche (Ontario, Canada.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Originally, published in 1992 and titled "Only in your Arms". In 2002, the author, Lisa Kleypas, revised the initial story and renamed it. The following is this reader's comparison.

Romance writing has changed during the last ten years. In this interpretation of the story, the author has ripened our characters' relationship by using friendship, humor, and attraction rather than Max's insatiable lust displayed in the earlier version.

Lisa Kleypas has written our heroine, Lysette Kersaint, as an intriguing woman, not breathtakingly beautiful as in the original, just a strong caring attractive person. Kleypas' pen allows Lysette to grow and become Maximilien Vallerand's staunch supporter and friend.

The author has toned down Max's personality. He is still a remarkable fellow, but is not the harsh angry man from the first edition. Furthermore, Kleypas has chosen to write Max enjoying an understanding relationship with his twin sons, rather than the unfriendly, demanding bond found in book one.

In this study, the writer chooses to explain the wicked Corrine Vallerand, as a woman stricken with a mental disorder. Following this interesting route, Kleypas presses for the reader''s sympathy rather than disgust for this disturbed wife and mother.

Even the loyal Vallerand housekeeper's, Noeline, has not escaped a revision. Here she emerges as a wise, well-spoken, poised woman. Even the description of Noeline's bloodlines is softly unveiled and gently drawn.

Comparing the two novels written ten years apart, I preferred this rendition of the Kleypas' story. The author has delivered a descriptive sensual story.

Grace Atkinson, Ontario - Canada.

2.0 out of 5 stars Probably not worth rewriting, Jan 7 2004
By Rebecca L. Doran (Madison, WI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Let me just say firstly that Kleypas is a good writer, and I generally enjoy her books. This one was just the exception.

I never read the first edition of this book, Only in Your Arms, but I can easily see how this is a revision of an early novel. It certainly has the FEEL of an early novel, with stops and starts, too much detail where there should be less, too little where there should be more.

All my initial impressions of characters were wrong; I thought Lysette, the heroine, would be slightly docile, leaning more towards the damsel in distress, Max, the hero, being more domineering, dark, with perhaps questionable intentions? The same was true with all the lesser characters. I don't know if this was intentional, or if the author was changing her mind about the characters as she went along.

And I never thought I'd say this about one of these books, but Lysette and Max were acually a little too amorous for me. Not that i don't enjoy a good love scene, but when it gets in the way of the plot, it's a problem. Whenever Max and Lysette get into an argument, it always goes to the bedroom (or floor, or desk...). It didn't seem like they ever actually solved their problems. You know those women who use sex to get their way? That's Lysette all over. It was really hard to respect either one of them.

And my favorite character turned out to be evil (that twist, by the way, becoming annoyingly obvious to the reader about 100 pages before the characters notice).

If you like steamy novels, you might like this. If you like a consistent plots and characters, you might not.
