Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Sex, violence and violent sex, plus lots of hokey Eastern mysticism?in other words, typical Lustbader fare?dominate the action in this sixth Nicholas Linnear novel, which brings to a close events begun in The Kaisho and continued in Floating City. Nicholas, half-British and half-Japanese, heads a computer firm on the verge of a mega-breakthrough that here is threatened by: a crazed Nietzsche-spouting American gangster who is Nicholas's doppelganger; the gangster's equally crazed, California-based brother, who's trying to take over the Eastern U.S. Mafia family run by a middle-aged suburban matron; an unholy mix of Japanese tycoons, pols and Yakuza; and a creepy, untrustworthy aide to Nicholas's ailing mentor. And then there's the order of nuns who fight evil in myriad ways, up to and including using their bodies in distinctly un-nunlike fashion. Fortunately, Nicholas has "Tau-tau, the secret knowledge of ancient psycho-necromancers," useful in a pinch for moving guided missiles or supercharged motorcycles but prone to side effects that cause depressing blackouts without moving the plot at all. As usual, Lustbader's prose can be as corny as what it describes ("It was a daring and dangerous plan, but it was their only chance to bring Bad Clams down. Or it was going to get all of them dead"), but his fans and armchair ninjas won't be disappointed with this energetic entry in the series. Major ad/promo; British, translation, first serial, movie and TV rights: Henry Morrison.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK action novel with absurd philosophical pretensions, May 20 2004
By Trevor Kettlewell "http://people.aapt.net.au/... (Nowra, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Eric's a bit like Kevin Kline's Fish Called Wanda, "Don't call me stupid" character. He's desperate to impress us by showing he's read some Nietzsche, and can spell both his and Goethe's names (probably better than I can), but someone needs to remind him that the central message of Buddhism is not 'every man for himself'. He does, for example, just get deconstruction wrong, and tries to portray a nun as a seriously devout believer who has no concept of an afterlife. He tries to give his standard action novel (with formula use of seedy sexual background, plus some eastern mysticism thrown in) the pretence of profundity: difficult when, poor soul, he can't actually conceive of anything more impressive than having a lot of money and being able to punch out, spiritually or physically, any comers. Think of Simon the sorcerer trying to buy a slice of the Holy Spirit. Even his 'enlightened' characters are as driven by materialism as the bad guys, they just aren't (quite) so arbitrarily bloodthirsty. Oh, and they do stupid things, despite purported intelligence.

If, however, you can ignore the deep contradictions, just enjoy the vibe of the trash spirituality/philosophy and take the ride of standard thriller characters and violence, sure, Lustbader will take you along.
