Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Fast plotting, thorough research and a swaggering-cop style elevate this sixth novel from Dreyer, known for Brain Dead (1997) and other standard medical/serial-killer thrillers. "SWATBabe" Maggie O'Brien is one tough broad. As a new tactical emergency medic for the city and county of St. Louis, Mo., trauma nurse at Blymore Memorial and part-time firefighter medic, she has to be. This single 26-year-old overachiever lives, loves and plays hard to release the pressure found in her work and in her stormy relationship with her abusive father, ex-cop Tommy "the Terminator" O'Brien. When one of her favorite mental patients, Montana Bob, a former top FBI agent, becomes a casualty in what should have been a fairly routine call, O'Brien finds her name on "The List" at Blymore-the hospital's wall where names of troublemakers are scrawled by medical personnel to relieve tension. Her gut instinct leads her to start investigating people on the list with a link to Montana Bob who have turned up dead, but no one wants to hear her suspicions, since they may implicate her own beloved colleagues. Soon O'Brien discovers she's being prepped as the "fall gal" when a series of inexplicable ER deaths appear to be caused by her. O'Brien makes a complex, conflicted heroine, defiantly macho and yet so scarred by family violence that she refuses to use a gun even when doing so could save the lives of those she loves.

From AudioFile

Maggie O'Brien, a nurse and medic on a SWAT team, is an overachiever. She's trying to get out from under her father's thumb--both physically and emotionally. But Maggie tries too hard to fit in. While on a hostage call, she uncovers a deadly plot and soon becomes a pariah in the ER, the morgue, and the police department as she investigates who is killing patients. Laural Merlington's characterization of O'Brien's tough exterior and tender interior is well done. Her pace keeps up with the action and suspense. Her vocal changes for O'Brien's insolent father and other hard-nosed city cops are believable, as well. 1.0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one, April 13 2004
By bookworm (Wenatchee, WA United States) - See all my reviews
I guess I am swimming against the flow, but I'm not liking this book. The author is cramming way too much trauma into each page, so much so it is hard to follow. Then at the end of a day our heroine goes home and [makes love violently] without any soothing or loving talk and wrecking her home in the process. It's too much to absorb. And the little over the dining table scene with her father and bimbo #7 was a bit much and unreal.Give me a Robin Cook whodunit any day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Suspense, Sep 20 2003
At Blymore Memorial, patients who shouldn't be dying are dropping like flies. Maggie O'Brien--ER nurse and SWAT team medic, stumbles across this information almost by accident. And when she begins to suspect the worst--that someone among her friends and co-workers is killing off the scum of society--she finds herself a target. As she doggedly pursues her investigation, Maggie faces anonymous threats, an abusive father, a nosy reporter, and the awful possibility that her beloved best friend and sometimes lover, Sean Delaney, might be part of a shocking conspiracy.

With her latest thrilling suspense novel, author Eileen Dreyer has reached a new high. Fascinating characters, intense emotion, and gritty medical and police detail combine for a powerful page-turner, although sometimes I had to put it down because it was overwhelming. Sometimes I had to take a break just to remind myself that I wasn't sweltering in a St. Louis summer with Maggie. But I always came back, and the ultra-satifying ending made me glad I did. I hope to see Maggie O'Brien in future books--there's a lot yet to be mined from her character.

5.0 out of 5 stars who dispenses justice?, Aug 5 2003
By Howard E. Aldrich (Chapel Hill, NC USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
i could not put this mystery book down and was holding my breath until the very end! the main character, maggie o'brien is a hospital nurse and medic on a SWAT team. you are given a glimpse into the world of hostage negotation and also into the frenzy of a hospital trauma unit. looming big in this fast-paced story is maggie's father, a cop no longer 'officially' on the police force and her boyfriend sean, who is a policeman. i found myself questioning how would i deal with truely 'bad' people given the opportunity to work 'outside' of the law and this is one of the issues maggie has to resolve.
