Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Combining his extensive knowledge of geology, mining and technology with relentless action sequences and exotic locales, Du Brul's latest (after River of Ruin) is 496 pages of nonstop, over-the-top adventure. Protagonist Dr. Philip Mercer, a wealthy geologist, "sometime" consultant and field agent for the times "when the worlds of science and terror collide," is charged with overseeing the installation of a temporary nuclear waste holding tank at Nevada's infamous Area 51. But after Mercer is nearly killed by assassins while on a Vegas furlough and then inexplicably saved by the stunningly beautiful Tisa Nguyen, he learns of a secret group called the Order. Headquartered in a Tibetan monastery, the Order can supposedly predict disastrous world events using an ancient machine, but a faction of the Order with sinister plans for world domination now jeopardizes the planet's survival. As Mercer barely escapes each near-death situation, well-drawn secondary characters-like his one-legged, hard-drinking 80-year-old best friend, Harry-help ground this adrenaline-drenched tale. Though not as suave as James Bond or as scrappy as Indiana Jones, smart, resilient Mercer is a savvy adventure hero for the new millennium.

Product Description

Hired to lead the excavation of caverns deep beneath Area 51, Philip Mercer finds himself drilling straight into the epicenter of an age-old conspiracy. A reclusive order of Himalayan monks, through special knowledge of the earth’s tectonic movement, has predicted the end of the world - and is determined to see the prediction unfold accordingly.

Now, with icebergs floating through the South Pacific and a thermonuclear bomb set to destroy an island paradise, the stage is set for Armageddon - and it is up to Philip Mercer and the beautiful, mysterious Tisa Nguyan to prevent a cataclysm beyond imagination.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Fantastic story from a master of adventure, Mai 11 2004
Par Un client
I love all of the Mercer books. This one is no exception. I was hesitant to start it because there were several people that said they hated the ending. I thought the ending was near perfect. I'll be interested to see what changes are coming for Mercer. I am now eagerly awaiting the next installment which is supposedly due next year....seems like a LONG wait. But, if Du Brul's history holds, it will be well worth the wait.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Tired of Clancy & Cussler?, Mai 1 2004
Par Anna M Shain (Clarksville, Arkansas United States) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Tired of the same old plots with the same old characters? Well, my friends Phillip Mercer is the perfect fix for all us action/thriller junkies. Mercer has taken over! More over Jack Ryan, Dirk Pitt, and Kurt Austin! There's a new hero on the block! He's kicking tail and taking names. Once again Jack DuBrul has raised the bar, kicked it into high gear, and let it all hang out. Enjoyed every page!! Keep 'em coming Jack!

3.0étoiles sur 5 OK beach read, Avril 21 2004
Par Jenny Blickman "from the block" (USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
the hero Mercer, a mining engineer/secret agent is recruited for a clandestine project based in the heavily guarded Area 51. Experimentation in the creation of a Star Trek-like transporter requires Mercer's subterranean mining expertise. This secret enterprise has created a seismic disturbance without the apparent occurrence of a volcano or earthquake. The story takes off from here and is loaded with action though a little thin on character development. Those who are familiar with Clive Cussler and his Dirk Pitt Novels are the target audience. This is ok beach reading but do not expect much more.

I read this right after reading Dan Brown's DECEPTION POINT and, while it doesn't have the pure adrenaline rush of that novel, this is still one helluva thriller. Read more
