Product Description

From AudioFile

John Saul returns to familiar territory with this supernatural tale about a boy possessed by the spirit of a long-dead child. When her husband is accidentally killed on his father's farm, Ann Hall moves to Nebraska with her young son, Michael, to be with her in-laws. Deciding to remain in Prairie Bend, Ann soon begins to regret her decision when it looks as if her son is connected to a series of gruesome murders. Reader Laural Merlington does very well with voices, easily switching from young to elderly and from male to female. Her reading helps build suspense in a satisfying contemporary thriller. Product Description

From the blood of the past, evil rises to seek undying vengeance... Prairie Bend.

Brilliant summers amid golden fields. Killing winters of razorlike cold. A peaceful, neighborly village, darkened by legends of death? Who is Nathaniel? For a hundred years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered the name in wonder and fear. Some say he is simply a folk tale - a legend created to frighten children on cold winter nights. Some swear he is a terrifying spirit returned to avenge the past. And soon...very soon...some will come to believe that Nathaniel lives still - darkly, horrifyingly real. Nathaniel.

For young Michael Hall, newly arrived in isolated Prairie Bend after having lost his father to a sudden tragic accident, Nathaniel is the voice that calls him across the prairie night...the voice that draws him into the shadowy depths of the old, crumbling barn where he has been forbidden to go...the voice - chanting, compelling - he will follow faithfully beyond the edge of terror...Nathaniel.

1.0étoiles sur 5 What a Mess, Déc 30 2001
Par Un client
This review is from: Nathaniel (Mass Market Paperback)
Nathaniel is one of the worst horror books I've ever read. The plot is great. The execution is terrible. Michael Hall is an annoying kid, and since he's the main character, the one we are suppose to fear for and identify with that'a flaw. He's supposed to be a preteen but reacts and behaves like a little boy. The womenfolk in this book are all ineffectual victims. There's suo much oddness and death in this town it's ludicrous that the cops and a possee of social workers don't make an appearance. The single most interesting character, including Nathaniel is Amos the grim grandfather who was not above killing to fulfill his vision of how things ought to be and he's one of the bad guys. This book was an all around dissappointment that has put me off Sual's books for good.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Well written and gloriously unspectacular., Mai 1 2000
This review is from: Nathaniel (Mass Market Paperback)
I suppose what makes a horror novel successful, above all other criteria, is the degree of suspense felt by the reader; this, of course, varies from person to person. Nathaniel was virtually free of suspense: most of the scenarios that Saul tosses at us are suspense of the cliffhanger variety. That is to say that although there is suspense by virtue of the situation, the reader more or less expects the outcome of each and every situation. This applies to all elements comprising the conclusion as well. It simply isn't a very good book where the story is concerned. But, in order to balance out the review, the writing skill must be mentioned. John Saul can, in short, tell an unenthralling story incredibly well. The details are drawn out to the very last strand of hair, the pace of the story varies incredibly well and, most importantly, Saul keeps a consistent third person tone. Unheard of! If only the story had been better.

3.0étoiles sur 5 GOOD ... BUT NOT WHAT I EXPECTED ..., Avril 20 1999
Par Un client
This review is from: Nathaniel (Mass Market Paperback)
At first glance, Nathaniel appears to be a good scary ghost story. However, it comes down to being a first-class soap opera in which the main character is manipulated by a relative with psychic powers. There doesn't even appear to be a hint of the supernatural about this story as the synopsis would have you believe. The characterization is good and are well-developed, but instead of a flowing storyline, the book gets entrapped in a complex maze of family history. The ending didn't pack the punch of other Saul novels --- only showed the viscious circle of life.
