Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Blood, sex and magic dance (sort of awkwardly) to a Terry Brooks tune in the pages of James Barclay's sprawling epic Dawnthief, the first book in his Chronicles of the Raven series. When members of the mercenary gang The Raven (motto: "Kill But Never Murder") agree to accompany a Xeteskian mage on his journey, little do they know that he will hold their destinies and the fate of the world in his hands, as he struggles to destroy the Wytch Lords, command the Dawnthief spell and live long enough to be a father to his unborn child. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Booklist

Barclay's hefty novel launches the Chronicles of the Raven, but be of good cheer, for it injects some originality into the traditional fantasy saga recipe. The Raven is a band of six humans and one elf in the war-torn kingdom of Balaia, which Barclay fills with the fruits of his considerable knowledge of military history and folklore. The comrades are no nicer than fellows loyal to one another and no one else need be, and their latest commission is a poser for them. They are to escort a Xeteskian mage, who is working for only the gods know whom, on a mission to find Dawnthief, a ring, or more precisely, a spell connected to a ring, that in the wrong hands could end the world. The mission is backed and supervised by the Dark College, which is even more untrustworthy than the mage. So matters rapidly deteriorate, to a cliffhanger ending. The narrative may be jumbled, but Barclay builds a world and peoples it intelligently. Roland Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than expected., May 26 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Dawnthief Mm (Paperback)
After reading the first few chapters and still not having a good feel for this book I was ready to set the book down and call it quits. Am I glad I didn't! Unfortunately, it wasn't till after reading 300 pages of the 508 page story that I came to an apreciation for the story and the writing. The last 200 pages was well written and much of the confusion cleared up as I became more familiar with Barclay's writing style and he became more comfortable and mature in technique.
The author is unique in style, and like Gemmell writes heroic-action fantasy, however, he is not Gemmell, and his heroes and world are unlike any of Gemmell's.
Each of Barclay's future books are better and better. More readable and easier to identify with the characters and story. A depth and maturity.
This is definityly a must read prior to reading the other books in this series or the Legends series. Once again, although recommended by David Gemmell and of the heroic-action fantasy genre, he is not Gemmell and Barclay's stories stand on there own.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average first novel, Jan 25 2004
By neoninfusion (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dawnthief (Paperback)
I purchased this book on the strength of the reviews on Amazon. Next time I will investigate more thoroughly as I found this novel to be disappointing.

First, the writing style is ordinary. I like, in fantasy, descriptions of the land in which the story is taking place so I can envisage the events taking place in a certain setting. Due to the authors neglect of this feature, I felt I had no compassion for the land nor its people.

Second, there is no development of character. The members of The Raven are typical of mercenaries who are nearing the ends of their careers - only concerned with their individual selves, while the mages all show characteristics of people with power. Every character is stereotypical.

Third, I rarely try to guess what will happen in a book as I like to be suprised. The storyline of Dawnthief is so predictable that I read the second half without any interest at all.

James Barclay has the potential to do much better in the future. He has some good ideas. I will wait a little longer to see if he writes something with more development and feeling. Then I will appreciate his work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful, Dec 15 2003
By Lex C. (Norfolk, VA United States) - See all my reviews
I can't begin to explain. This book was a waste not only of $11+, but of 2 days of my life, as well.

The author is a classic example of a dried up D&D player who wants to write a book after reading too much R.A. Salvatore. The world building is childlike, the "heroes" are depthless, and the plot was designed by a simpleton.

This is one of those books that appears to have been floated in its Amazon rankings by friends of the author- it reads like a self-published book.

I am angered that I was bamboozled into purchasing it. Most of the reviews here read better than the story itself.
