2.0 out of 5 stars Great if you already know some programming, Aug 10 2006
By N. J. Williams "armchair explorer" (Davis, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My 10-year-old son wanted to learn how to program video games, so I bought this book and we started working through it together. Sethi has a nice, breezy style and you really think you're going to learn this stuff. But as early as chapter 2 we ran into technical mistakes in his code. At that early point in his instruction I could figure out the problem myself (a missing "End If" line). But by chapter 3, when he starts in on arrays, we were lost. We'd painstakingly copy out his code into our version of BlitzPlus, only to discover it didn't work--usually because he'd failed to define a user-defined function in his code. By the end of the chapter I could pinpoint exactly where the problem was going to be in his examples, but having no programming experience myself, had no clue how to fix them. We gave up in frustration & disappointment. A serious technical editor should have gone through this book first and actually *tried* everything. It's a shame, because the book is so promising.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for both adults and teens alike!, Feb 4 2005
By A Customer
With all the books out there pretending to teach you how to program a game only to drop you into detailed C++ code and telling you "don't worry - it will make sense later" (and it never does), this book gives you an excellent handle on programming 2d games using tools that save you the trouble of becoming a C++ expert for no good reason. Instead it shows you another tool that's easier than C++ but still fast enough to make just about any 2d game you can imagine The book doesn't have anything on 3d in it but if you're looking to make a 2d game in a short amount of time, this one's hard to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, Jun 10 2004
By Derek Thompson (Harrison, AR USA) - See all my reviews
I am a teenager and I have tried to read another book but didn't understand it. I got this book a couple of weeks ago and after reading the first three chapters I made a text based game of pong. Now since I have read the whole thing I have started making a whole game with graphics and everythin I had learned. If this book can teach me and keep my attention it can teach anyone who wants to know how
to make games and is looking for a book to start with I highly recommend this Book
