JOAN AIKEN (1924-2004) was the author of many plays and screenplays,as well asbooks such as The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and Black Hearts in Battersea. Her 1968 novel, The Whispering Mountain, won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Award. She was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to children's literature
