Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

It's double the pleasure and double the fun as Woods brings series character Holly Barker, chief of the Orchid Beach, Fla., police department (of Orchid Blues, etc.), onstage to co-star with PI Stone Barrington (of Dirty Work, etc.) in his latest adventure. Holly's come to New York hot on the trail of Trini Rodriguez, a bad guy she thought she'd stabbed to death in an earlier adventure. He's currently wanted for (among other things) blowing up a dozen people by hiding bombs in the caskets of two of his earlier victims and detonating them at the funeral. But finding him won't be so simple: he's been placed in the FBI Witness Protection Program and is working with the Feds and the CIA to catch an Arab terrorist group trying to employ the Mafia in a money-laundering scheme. Shortly after Holly takes up residence in Stone's guest room, the two of them are hip deep in the dangerous caseâ€"and likewise each other. They go at it so often it's hard to say what's going to kill Stone first: the Mafia, Arab terrorists or the athletic, all-night sex. Cross-pollinating all these characters from various books makes for some heavy-handed background exposition at times, but readers with no previous experience will still enjoy this amusing, full-throttle sex and crime romp. Stone's ex-partner and best pal, Dino Bachetti, head of the detective squad at the 19th precinct, sums up Stone's appeal, and that of the entire series, when he says of his friend: "Wherever you go, people drop dead, and women take off their underwear." That's it in a nutshell.

From AudioFile

Woods's latest needs a pro like actor Tony Roberts. That's because the author not only joins two of his favorite characters, Stone Barrington and Holly Barker, he also melds several complex subplots around the main plot. Florida Police Chief Barker shows up in Manhattan in pursuit of a fugitive. There she and Barrington track a mobster hidden in the Witness Protection program. Meanwhile, the listener is treated to several comic episodes wherein cop-turned-lawyer Barrington successfully represents Herbie, a loser who has violated probation and kneed his arresting officer in the groin. The prosecutor just happens to be the injured cop's older sister. The thick New York accent Roberts creates for Herbie is priceless, and his straight deliveries move things along. This is an offering you won't abandon. A.L.H. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stone and Holly together! Awesome!, Jul 13 2004

This review is from: Reckless Abandon (Hardcover)
Stuart Woods' characters Stone Barrington and Holly Barker are amazing forces to be reckoned with independently, but when meshed together in another riveting novel in the Barrington series, they just unglue the seems of sizzle... I mean, awesome! I love these characters together, and I was hoping for this ever since the Stone cameo appearance in Barker series.

Way to go, Stuart Woods!

1.0 out of 5 stars time to stop, Jul 11 2004
By sports fan (Shaker Heights, oh United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Reckless Abandon (Audio Cassette)
This is Stuart Woods' most disappointing yet. After starting as a serious writer (Chiefs was brilliant) he moved on to light "beach reading" that I always enjoyed in the car on audiotape. The first few were fun and creative, with interesting characters. He has now destroyed his best two characters, Stone Barrington and Holly Barker, by making them charicatures of their former selves. Not even a sexual relationship involving these two formerly interesting characters can save this attempt to get money from former loyal readers. Woods may live well on the proceeds, but he has lost his audience. As a talented writer, he must now decide whether to continue to fall into disrepute or to suck it up and write something worth reading. I hope he has made enough money to do the latter, because if he has not he will never be able to keep us former fans buying.
On another note, the narrator on the audio version was horrible. He made the lame dialogue of the main characters completely implausible, and especially made the formerly interesting and strong character, Holly, a bimbo. This was a disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reckless Abandon, Jul 6 2004

I also wish I could rate this book "0" stars. Woods use to be one of my favorite authors. Alas, no more. In his latest attempt to write, he has made Stone and Dino into standup comics. The dialogue is awful. I wonder how many DAYS it took him to write this book. Certainly no thought or real effort was put forth. How could someone write a masterpiece like Chiefs and fall to such a literary low in this book. Sorry Stuart, you have lost me as a reader. I will not purchase another book with your name on it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Like Stuart Woods, but this book stinks
The dialogue between characters in this book is laughable. It seems little effort was put in to the writing of this novel. Very weak plot.
