Product Description

From Booklist

Quarry is a paid killer, not some moping hit man with a conscience. Just a careful, efficient guy who believes in a day's work for a day's pay. Collins, author of the Nate Heller series, among dozens of other novels and short stories, worked Quarry into his oeuvre in the 1970s and '80s. This anthology brings together three Quarry short stories and one novel. The latter, Primary Target, written in 1987 and generally overlooked, finds Quarry retired and living a quiet life on his Wisconsin vacation resort. He's married with a child on the way. Then he's asked to kill a presidential candidate. He declines. The folks who made the offer can't afford to have anyone alive know their plan. They try for Quarry but get his family. Bad mistake. The three stories included here reflect Collins' sardonic humor and his extraordinary ability to take his plots on an unexpected detour or two. Odds are that, after sampling this fine collection, Collins' enthusiastic fans will demand the return of Quarry. Wes Lukowsky

5.0 out of 5 stars one strong novel and four delightful shorts, Oct 20 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This anthology consist of one strong novel and four delightful shorts starring a hit man who suffers no remorse as he sees this as a means of earning a buck. Readers familiar with Quarry will know this book is a winner and he will fascinate newcomers. This collection represents some of Max Collins greatest hits.

"Primary Target". This is an exciting novel that showcases the intriguing antihero at his best. In his thirties, Quarry is retired from his kill for pay job. He lives comfortable in Paradise Lake, Wisconsin running an in inn with his young pregnant wife Linda. A client offers Quarry $1 million to assassinate ultra right wing religious fanatic and presidential candidate Freed. Quarry turns down the job. Not long afterward two amateurs attack Quarry's home killing his spouse and visiting brother-in-law, but failing to take out the key antagonist. Quarry dispatches the duo and begins his quest for vengeance.

The four short stories are all well written and provide further insight into Quarry, a strong character whose presence is enhanced by deep secondary players and strong plotting.
