From Publishers Weekly

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants author delivers her first novel for adults, a treacly tale about the tribulations a trio of longtime friends encounter. For as long as she can remember, 21-year-old Alice has spent summers on Fire Island with her parents and older sister, Riley. Riley, 24, is a beach lifeguard, more boyish in both looks and spirit than sweet, feminine Alice. An island neighbor and Riley's best friend, Paul, whose father is dead and mother mostly absent, returns to the island after two years away and must decide whether to sell his family's house there. More importantly, he and Alice finally act on an attraction they've felt for years, but they keep their frequent nuzzling quiet so as not to hurt Riley. Riley, meanwhile, has her own problems that could ruin Alice and Paul's clandestine romance and just about everything else. Brashares's YA roots are on display: the girls and Paul act like high school kids (Riley threatens to move out of the house unless everyone butts out; Paul and Alice are stricken with the most saccharine of puppy love), and anything below the surface is left untouched. It's a beach read, for sure, but a mediocre one. (June)

3.0étoiles sur 5 Minimalistic near-miss., Juil 12 2008

I've come to believe that if you're going to take a spare, stark, poetical approach to writing a story, you have to be 'in for a penny, in for a pound'. And this novel, unfortunately, does not remain true to its austere, lyrical, 'don't look at the object, look at its shadow' inclinations.

There is some extremely evocative stuff here, despite it being so stripped-down in presentation. Brasheres presents a very compelling triptych with the three main characters, some delightful notions, some quite-stirring interplay...but too many times her reach exceeds her grasp, and she falters, and what was promised in the set-up does not get delivered by the end. (Never mind the fact that I found some of the behaviour of this trio to be worthy of being smacked...HARD.) I believe a firmer editorial hand would have helped.

Though a failed one, it's a lovely effort, boding great things down the literary road for the author.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Navel Gazing at its worst, Jui 12 2008

First, let me say that as an adult I am in LOVE with the sisterhood books. They bring back my teen years, and her characterizations are as perfect as the characters themselves are imperfect. She writes about people that could easily be real. That said, I picked up The Last Summer of You and Me with great expectations; perhaps too great. To me, the book is simply badly written. There is next to no plot, and what seems to be endless navel gazing - inward reflections that go on forever. Basically, it's a book about nothing. There was a TV show about nothing that went on for years, but at least it was funny. Ms. Brashares' characters simply take themselves much too seriously. Skip it, and hope her next book is better.

4.0étoiles sur 5 At first, I wasn't too sure..., Juil 15 2007

then I remembered why I loved reading The Sisterhood books so much and how complex those characters could be, as well. The seemingly endless narration of the 3 main characters' introspectiveness and self-examination eventually led me to remember those other four characters. The pared-down dialogue which bothered me in the beginning must have hit its mark, for having finished the book and started another, I find myself still thinking about Summer.

Ms. Brashares can definitely write.
