From AudioFile

In the eleventh in Patterson's series, FBI Specialist Alex Cross's family vacation at Disneyland is interrupted by two unconnected events: His ex-wife abruptly gains custody of their young son and a shocking series of Hollywood murders comes to light. The use of three readers doesn't add clarity to this puzzle, except that Melissa Leo, the sole female narrator, delivers the murderer's emails with an acidic edge. Peter J. Fernandez and Michael Louis Wells portray Alex Cross and the whirlwind of events that compel him to help the LAPD with the celebrity murder cases. Cross's concern for the well-being of his own family is chillingly juxtaposed with the murderer's messages about raising children. From Booklist

Last seen in London Bridges (2004) chasing a terrorist, Washington, D.C., PD detective turned FBI agent Alex Cross is enjoying a much-needed vacation at Disneyland with his family when he's called in by the FBI to consult with the LAPD on a high-profile murder case. A-list actress Antonia Schifman has been slain, her face so badly cut up that she's almost unrecognizable. The murder isn't random; an L.A. Times gossip columnist has received a series of e-mails from a woman named Mary Smith, taking responsibility for the killing of Antonia, her chauffeur, and a well-known female movie producer. Cross studies the e-mails, which make reference to Mary's ordinary appearance and her fixation on the perfect families, particularly the children, of both women. When another prominent woman is slain, Cross is sucked into the case full time, jeopardizing the outcome of the custody battle he's involved in over his youngest son. As Cross studies the e-mails and patterns of the killer, he realizes he can't be certain of anything, even the gender of Mary Smith. The thrills in Patterson's latest lead to a truly unexpected, electrifying climax. Kristine Huntley

4.0étoiles sur 5 James Patterson is back in form!, Nov. 2 2008

Top females on Hollywood's A-list are being murdered in a particularly vicious manner. The details of each killing make it clear that the motives are entirely personal. After each killing (and in one case almost during the killing itself), the murderer sends an e-mail to a Hollywood entertainment writer gloating about the murder and virtually daring the police to come and get her. Yes, you read that correctly ... "HER"! The e-mails are all signed "Mary Smith"! Top FBI Agent Alex Cross, much to his chagrin and to the disappointment of his children and his long-suffering grandmother, is pulled away from a well-deserved Disneyland holiday with his family and ordered to act as a consultant to the LAPD on the case.

Admittedly, there's nothing about "Mary, Mary" that will elevate it beyond the ranks of enjoyable brain candy thriller to the status of literature. But it is worth noting that unlike the outrageously weak fare that we suffered through in "London Bridges", "Mary, Mary" seems to be a long awaited return to the quality of thriller that justifiably vaulted James Patterson onto best seller lists around the world. We're treated to an enjoyable plot that moves along with compelling page-turning speed. Alex Cross, in the manner of Inspector Rebus, Harry Bosch and all of the other loner cops in mystery and thriller literature successfully marches to the rhythm of his own drummer. We are also witness to some realistic character development as we watch the relationship with his current squeeze, Jamilla, go down in flames and we hurt with him as he is hauled into a nasty court custody battle for his beloved son, Alex. And our heart aches as Patterson gives us a wrenching example of the trials of a complete mental breakdown!

Literature? No. Brain Candy? Yes. Memorable? Not particularly. Enjoyable? Absolutely! Highly recommended.

I found this an amazing thriller, again a Patterson book full of twists and turns. The story and the characters are outstanding, the pace is fast and unpredictable, not a dull moment, and I truly enjoy this book and couldnt put it down.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A very magnetic story, Mars 21 2007

I very much enjoyed this story. Indepth character details, real emotions and life situations. But, If i had to give a weak point it would be too many story lines. This is a detective story with very imaginative and psychological story lines, where does personal family drama fit in really? I found that i lost the "beat" of the story each time Patterson veered away from the thrill and drama pace, to update us on Cross' family or romantic liasons. But wow, what a great imagination and up until the last it had me questioning the "bad guy" or "bad woman" or well.... I won't ruin it for you and tell you either will i?!
a definate recommendation for all though.
