From Publishers Weekly

Simmons's lumbering seafaring adventure-cum-ghost story is solidly manned by Vance, who invests his reading with a vinegary tang perfectly suitable for the nautical setting. Vance derives special pleasure from the opportunity to dive into the book's mixture of King's English, Cockney, Scottish and Irish accents, delivering each with brio and panache. Working with characters who express themselves lustily, Vance avails himself of the opportunity to chew the scenery and makes the most of it. Simmons's novel mingles genres, alternating between horror and maritime action, and Vance uses tone and pitch to indicate the story's joints and digressions. Vance enjoys declaiming Simmons's characters' speeches in booming voices, as would be appropriate for the book's setting, but those listeners residing in apartments, or with babies, would be advised to keep the sound turned firmly down to avoid any potential noise complaints.

From AudioFile

A blistering winter voyage, complete with scurvy, starvation, and thrilling adventure, is the focus of this powerful and beautifully realized tale of exploration on the high seas. Simmons's writing is so vivid that narrator Simon Vance need only deliver the material with a clear and firm reading to capture the interest of listeners. Vance does this so well that the presentation sounds like a recorded journal entry and captivates listeners from start to finish as he plays his role with the utmost respect for Simmons's work. The result is a moving listening experience--perfectly executed--which transports listeners to the galley of the HMS Terror during its expedition through the Arctic Circle. L.B. This review is from: The Terror: A Novel (Hardcover)
I have always been a fan of Dan Simmons. Almost without fail, his novels entertain and educate, and they stick with you long after you have closed the cover.
This is probably the best thing he's ever written.
One caveat: you probably should refrain from reading this novel in the depths of winter. Simmons was somehow able to drop the temperature around me with words alone, surely some sort of dark miracle.
The Terror has everything: historical veracity, characters you live and die with, and a taut and tense storyline that has you flipping pages almost against your will. Conflicting emotions warred in my head: 'I gotta finish this!'
'Yeah, but when you do, whatever you read after that's gonna be terrible in comparison.'
'Yeah, but I gotta finish this!'
This novel will inspire nightmares in the more imaginative of its readers. But it also elicits hearty laughter in places, and I cried at least twice.

Truly phenomenal writing. Buy this book.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Great read!, Fév 26 2007

This review is from: The Terror: A Novel (Hardcover)
To be honest, I never thought I would enjoy this novel as much as I did. The Terror was meant to be some sort of break from my preferred speculative fiction picks. The book being based on the true story of the ill-fated Franklin expedition, I was expecting a detailed historical thriller. The Terror is indeed that, and then some! I should have known that an author such as Dan Simmons would have integrated a few "fiction" elements to the mix.

What is beyond the shadow of a doubt the most brilliant facet of this novel is the fact that it reads like a firsthand account. The acknowledgements at the end of the book demonstrate the kind of extensive research which was required to produce such a detailed work. Still, it took a master storyteller to weave all those disparate elements into such an excellent whole. À la Patrick O'Brian, Dan Simmons literally plunges the reader into the day-to-day life aboard HMS Erebus and Terror. Sailors, it seems, at least based on a number of references, share a proclivity for farting. . . As one reads along, you can definitely feel all an expedition through Arctic ice encompasses. Moreover, Simmons captures the frigid landscape and the Siberian temperatures beautifully. The narrative conveys the bone-chilling cold and its repercussions on the two ships and their crews in a manner I've never encountered before.

The characterizations are "top notch," another aspect which makes The Terror a "must read." Much like George R. R. Martin, most of Simmons' chapters showcase a different POV character. Witnessing the crews' struggle for survival through the eyes of such contrasting characters makes for an even better reading experience.

My only complaint would have to be that the book is at times overlong. Of course, any tale that recounts such a voyage down to the smallest of details will not engender a crisp pace. For the most part, this was no problem. And yet, I feel that speeding things up in certain portions of the novel would have helped with the overall rhythm.

I found The Terror to be an intense and satisfying read. If this book doesn't make my Top 10 of 2007, it will have been an incredible year!

If anyone elected not to pick this one up because of The Time Traveler short story/essay, you are missing out on an exceptional novel.

To all you fans looking for quality stand-alone books, look no further. The Terror is what you need!

5.0étoiles sur 5 Another Dan Simmons Gem, Janv. 31 2007

This review is from: The Terror: A Novel (Hardcover)
For those of you not familiar with Dan Simmons, welcome to one of the best authors of our time. For those of you already familiar with Dan Simmons you will not be disappointed. The book is a metaphorical dark and horrible trip into the soul of man. We see the death and rebirth of men in many forms. Although it more than 700 pages Simmons brilliantly, does not rush the story while keeping the reader turning the pages in anticipation. The intensity with which it is written will drive the reader to a point where you can take no more. Compared to many other modern authors the book is a "breath of fresh reading". This book will be a classic.
