Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9–Lucy, the main character in Cathy Hopkins's novel (Simon Pulse, pap. 2003), will remind listeners of Georgia in Louise Rennison's Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series (HarperCollins). The story here is told in the first person, but not in the scatter-shot diary format favored by Georgia. Fourteen-year-old Lucy is more introspective, less self-centered, and less superficial than Georgia, if not quite as laugh-out-loud hysterical. There is plenty here on the subject of boys, appearance, and changing friendships, and there's also is a fair dose of humor. Lucy displays a sensitivity and concern for her place in her family, her friendships, and her world. Amanda Hulme's rendition reflects the voice and phrasing of a young teen very well. She also subtly but convincingly distinguishes between the other characters. As Lucy struggles with looking younger than her friends and defining what she might like to do in the future with her particular talents, she meets her dream boy and she must seriously consider what it means to grow up and to find her own way. Fans of Georgia Nicolson will enjoy this well-rounded look at another young teenager working her way through the transition from young teen to adulthood. This thoughtful novel belongs in all audio collections serving young teens.–Jane P. Fenn, Corning-Painted Post West High School, NY

From AudioFile

At age 14, Lucy looks 12, while her friends can easily pass for 16-year-olds. Narrator Amanda Hulme is irresistible as Lucy and her friends, Izzy and Nesta. Hulme captures the bittersweet emotions Lucy experiences as she sets her sights on a boy, makes difficult decisions, and copes with a new girl becoming part of a longstanding friendship. There's humor aplenty as the girls resort to tarot cards, discover inflatable bras, and get bad haircuts. Young listeners will see themselves in many of the situations. 1.0 out of 5 stars Really Not Worth The Eye Strain, April 12 2005
By Alix (The One In Which I Exist) - See all my reviews
A rather disapointing read frankly and simply put. The plot is transparent, and besides that fact it is much too feel good, perfection in the end to be of any sort of enduring value, lesson or for that matter intrigue and enterainment. Additionally the problems are all too run of the mill type to provide any sort of true comedy, they've been done before and the overwrought trials of literary adolescents fail to inspire anything but one's gag reflex. That was harsh, I'll admit, but the point is that this book was highly disapointing, I don't recommend it no matter what your age or IQ. Yes it has its cute moments but no deeper force that can move it beyond the eye catching quality of the neon coloured cover with a pink bra on it. I agree with one of the previous reviews that any one of the Full Frontal Snogging books are of much more enterainment, and are much more worth one's time. Frankly, if you're going to dabble in this genre why not just read the Bridget Jones books which all of these sort of books are attempting to rip off anyways? Of course this recommendation comes second to the following: read of the classic tormented British adolescent (and later adult) with the Adrian Mole series. It will prove much more worth your time than this dribble.

By MatezNdatez (the weird land) - See all my reviews
WOW!! This is the first book of a great series. Every teen should try and read it!! It's about a girl named Lucy who feels kind of different from every1 in her grade, because, well, she's around 13/14 and she looks like an 11 yr. old. After meeting the boi who she thinks is the boi of her dreams, she startz trying 2 change. She has 2 cope with Nesta, a new girl who her BFF Izzie has befrended, and she doesn't knowif she wantz 2 b a threesum. It getz even WORSE when it turns out her biggest crush is supposebly a PLAYER and Nesta's BROTHER!! There are many turns and twists in this book. READ IT ONLY if u want a GGGGGGGGGGGGGGREAT book!!
