Product Description

From Booklist

Mario Conde is a retired Havana cop obsessed with Hemingway, so when the skeletal remains of a man killed on Papa's Cuban estate 40 years earlier are unearthed, it's only natural that the police ask Conde to work the case. A celebrated mystery writer in Cuba, Fuentes offers a fascinating mix of fact and fiction, jumping between present and past, and vividly dramatizing Hemingway's last days in Cuba. What is most fascinating about the book is the character of Conde, torn between his mixed feelings about Hemingway the man and the writer, but drawn to the case like a supplicant to the altar. Fans of Cuban noir will love the cars, the crumbling chic of old Havana, and, of course, the aftertaste of rum-soaked decadence, but best of all, finally, is the priceless anecdote about Ava Gardner's black silk knickers, a souvenir to die for. Give this one to fans of Brazilian Garcia-Roza's Inspector Espinosa series, about another melancholy Latin sleuth who feels what Conde calls "solidarity with writers, crazy people, and drunkards." This review is from: Adios Hemingway (Paperback)
Art Matters: The Art of Knowledge/The Knowledge of Art
Natural Law, Science, and the Social Construction of Reality

I discovered this book after returning from a holiday in Cuba. While I did get to drink at the famous Hemingway bar, and since I am bearded and somewhat large, a local actually called me "Hemingway."

This novel takes place after the famous Havana Quartet where our hero quit the police force. Here he is called back to help solve a very old crime when bones are dug up on the old Hemingway home near Havana.

The novel brings up wonderful atmospheres of Cuba and of the day to day concerns of the Cuban people, and of the mutual hold Cuba and Hemingway had on each other.

The question here is whether or not Hemingway could have killed this person. And Padura has some real fun with the speculation about Hemingway and life on the estate in general.

In a sense, without being overt, all the novels in this series are political in that they describe differences between pre and post revolution Cuba. The people clearly prefer today, but these books also discuss the real shortcomings of life in Cuba today.

And, after five books, the character still comes out great.
