I would have given this book a 5 but for the fact that I felt that the author took too much time setting up the story, and when the action finally began it felt a bit rushed. Part of this sense of rush is due to the fact that the author was dividing his attention between 2 action fronts and when both threads were finally joined it was a rush to the finish.

That being said, I continue to enjoy the adventures of Gaunt and his Tanith Ghosts in their struggle against the Ruinous Powers of Chaos. This book had me chuckling at times, and and on the verge of tears at other times. Dan Abnett has a way of making his characters real to the reader and it is natural to form an attchment. In order to fully understand this book it is neccessary to have read the previous book, Traitor General, and so I won't reveal any of the previous happenings. If you're a long time fan of Gaunt and his Ghosts you'll love this story, if you're just being introduced to Commisar Gaunt I suggest you go and pick up either Traitor General or better yet, the very first book in the series First and Only.

One thing that would have been nice, and it's still possible, is for the author to write a series of short stories detailing what the Ghosts were up to while Gaunt and his strike team were on Geron, like he did with Ghost Maker.
