While Courage and Honour is a good book, it is not excellent. If you are a fan of Ultramarines, you will like this novel. The characters within represent the epitome of all that is Space Marine. The reason why I give this novel a 3-star is because of almost everything outside the Space Marines. Teens might like the huge light-show and explosions, but if you want anything more, I'd pass this one.

The beginning the plot gives a few flashbacks of Uriel Ventris' previous adventures in the beginning, along with a skirmish with Tau Pathfinders. Then, the Tau blow up a comms relay and all hell breaks loose. While the narration and the characters are good, I feel there are a few flaws.

The rest of the novel describes the war, and while the descriptions and explosions are very detailed, the plot slips. A lot. From the first battle on, the rest of the novel is essentially explosions, Tau rushing to the offensive by the thousands, and the Ultramarines pummeling them to a bloody pulp while taking minimal casualties. The Imperial Guard are there under the PDF and the Lavrentians #88th, I think, but essentially they are there to show how puny and weak humans are compared to the Space Marines.

The story also fails to deliver on the strategic level. Any dim-witted tactician would easily realise the Tau are pointlessly fighting a losing attrition warfare, when they are the most mobile force on the planet. The pretense of a diversionnary attack on the capital is also laughable, as is the urgent need to take the City of Bridges when they can ford the canyon when and where they choose with their anti-grav tanks. Finally, for a long-range army who values the lives of it's soldiers, it's incredible how much the Tau are unacurralely described as mindlessly charging up the no-man's land to assault the trenches.

Most of my grief comes from the fact I'm a Tau player. In here, the Tau essentially serve as a punching-bag to the Ultramarines. It seems just a little odd tome thousands of Tau were easily and messily butchered while only 15 (unnamed# Marines died. Also, I hoped to gain a lot of info on them in this novel. For me, this novel was a little of a waste, as all Tau info was essentially copy/pasted from the Codex.

If you like Space Marines, go ahead. The novel is good. If you don't care about the Tau, go ahead. If you are Tau, don't buy. Simple as that. The more you'll reread it, the more you'll hate it.
