Thank goodness for the Phoenix Press and its decision to reissue the historical novels of Alfred Duggan. This one, The Lady for Ransom, is one of his best and would make a fine introduction to one of the genre's most unjustly neglected masters. First published in the 1950s and 60s Duggan's books are a treat for fans of historical fiction, especially the Roman and medieval periods. His usual dry humour, keen eye for detail and shrewd characterization are all evident here.

In 1071 the army of the Byzantine Empire lost one of the most important battles in history when, at Manzikert, they were betrayed from within and overrun by the invading Seljuk Turks. The Lady for Ransom tells the story of the consequences of the battle as seen through the eyes of Norman mercenaries who have rented their swords to the Emperor Romanus Diogenes. Central to Duggan's purpose is the contrast between the overly-sophisticated Byzantines and the coarser western knights, a contrast which cleverly serves to reveal the mindsets of both sides.

Readers will find few lurid scenes of sex or gore in a Duggan novel but they will always come away entertained and educated. Also recommended are Three's Company, the account of Marcus Lepidus and the Second Triumvirate and The King of Athelney about King Alfred.
