Product Description

One cold autumn night, a woman is found hanging from a beam in her summer cottage by Lake Thingvellir. At first sight it appears to be a straightforward case of suicide; the woman, Maria, had never recovered from the loss of her mother two years earlier and had a history of depression. But when Karen, the friend who found her body, approaches Erlendur and gives him the tape of a seance that Maria had attended, his curiosity is aroused. Driven by a need to find answers that even he does not fully understand, Erlendur embarks on an unofficial investigation to find out why the woman's life ended in such an abrupt and tragic manner. At the same time he is haunted by the unresolved cases of two young people who went missing thirty years before, and, inevitably, his discoveries raise ghosts from his own past.

Indridason has created a cast of characters that, over several books, I have come to really care about. His mysteries are wonderfully suspensful and the writing (because of amazing translation) is crisp and clear. This book may be the best in the series. It brings together a number of threads from other books and allows you to understand the heart and mind of the detective. This was a brave book in that it is without high tension - there is murder but oddly no danger - and because of this we come to see how the heart of murder is incredibly cold.

This review is from: Hypothermia (Hardcover)
I've have always viewed Icelandic culture as a national mindset that enshrouds itself in a wraith of mystery arising from a creative blend of the normal and abnormal. Indridason, one of Iceland's leading crime writers, has produced in his latest work a sizzling story of intrigue, love and courage that does justice to all that abides in this nordic realm. Here are some compelling reasons why this latest chilling "Reykjavik" novel might rate a read for those who warm to a good crime thriller:
A. The majestic Icelandic countryside is presented in all its ancient geological power: deep tarns, active volcanoes, geysers, waterfalls and bogs;
B. As in previous novels, the main character, Police Detective Erlendur, is developed as a multi-dimensional character who brings a considerable amount of native intelligence to his job as a sleuth;
C. The story combines a number of intricate and sinister subplots that open the reader to the social and economic challenges of living in a virtually enclosed society like Iceland;
D. Nothing is wasted in the telling of this story. All its parts, including Erlendur's personal trauma from a haunting past, play a part in eventually solving its perplexing mysteries and accounting for the actions of its characters;
E. The author builds in a suitable amount of suspense to lead his readers to a realistic conclusion;
F. The investigative powers of Erlendur probe the dark subliminal forces at work on the troubled minds of his many colorful characters;
G. A moderate reference to the paranormal in the form of seances and near-death experiences adds a special dimension to the plot;
H. In the end, the reader will come away with a fairly decent idea of what it means to live in a world whose ethnic and moral compasses are often heading in vastly different directions.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Another Great Mystery, Janv. 14 2010

This review is from: Hypothermia (Hardcover)
Book 6, in the Reykjavik Murder Mystery series.

This is a fantastic book; its plot is solid, simple with no dramatic and thrilling climaxes, but it is masterfully written giving it depth without any frills. The straightforward writing evokes sentiments while weaving smoothly from one event to another. True to the author's style there is a link between the past and the present with a mix of reality and the supernatural that is gradually blended into the story as we follow a thoughtful, compassionate protagonist that has a strong desire to resolve old cases

This fascinating mystery moves at a pleasant speed and opens when Erlendur receives a tape of a séance attended by a woman who subsequently committed suicide. She had attempted to communicate with her mother to discover what afterlife has in store for her. Erlendur's inner need to learn more and to understand what drove the woman this far triggers a panoply of events. The search for answers brings him far into the depths of his own personal history and the loss of his young brother in a blizzard.

The author's perception of grief is brought forward in this novel but it is not all sadness it has some funny moments with superb interludes into the magical Icelandic landscape.

"Hypothermia" is not your conventional police procedural novel; it focuses a great part on the protagonist and his dysfunctional family life. I recommend this series for its solid mystery, great character development and original subject matter tied to Icelandic myth and culture.
