From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9–The young sky-pirate Captain Twig has been sent on a quest by his father Cloud Wolf. To save his world, he must sever the Anchor Chain of the floating city Sanctaphrax–home to academics and alchemists–before the Mother Storm arrives to reseed Riverrise with her rain. Unfortunately, Twig's memory of his father's instructions is gone, and his crew is scattered. Accompanied by Cowlquape, a Sanctaphrax apprentice, he scours the lands below for his crew and clues to the memories he has lost. Midnight is peopled with complex characters like woodelves, who can read minds; and wigwigs, fuzzy, Tribblelike creatures that happen to be carnivorous. Riddell's illustrations perfectly complement Stewart's text, but could mistakenly lead those perusing the book to assume it is for younger readers. It is not. Violence occurs, and characters die, some deservedly, others not. Stewart tackles issues of slavery and class structure while still maintaining a good adventure story with a very Hobbit-like feel to it. Readers unfamiliar with the series will have no trouble following this story, but expect a demand for Beyond the Deepwoods and Stormchaser (both Random, 2004).–Lisa Prolman, Greenfield Public Library, MA

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. Twig, the young sky pilot first introduced in Beyond the Deepwoods [BKL Jl 04]^B steers his ship into a storm, through a treacherous weather vortex and beyond, where he finds his father and discovers what he must do to save his world, the Edge. In the violent aftermath of this meeting, his ship is blown apart, and his crew is blasted away like shooting stars. Twig loses not only the ship but also his memory of how to save his homeland. On a quest to find his crew, he befriends a sympathetic young scholar who joins him on his journey. Though at some points the book requires a monumental suspension of disbelief and a hearty appetite for words such as gasped and juddered, the action-oriented plot and fantastic world of this third volume in Chronicles of Edge will delight fans and entice new readers. Riddell again contributes skillful ink drawings. Carolyn Phelan

5.0étoiles sur 5 Greatest Book in All of History, Mars 10 2006
Princesses, unicorns, and dragons. You won’t find those in this fantasy story! Midnight Over Sanctaphrax not only doesn’t have princesses, unicorns, and dragons, it has some creatures that don’t even exist in some people’s imagination. Half of the characters in this story aren’t even human. There are oakelfs, banderbears, different kinds of waifs, flat-head goblins, cloddertrogs and many more!
The main character is Twig. He is a very determined person because he still searches for his crew even when he has faced dangerous obstacles and troubles already trying to find them. Another main character is Cowlquape. He is very loyal to Twig because he faced all the obstacles and troubles with Twig all the way. Twig’s crew members are Spooler (an oakelf), Goom(a banderbear), Woodfish (a waterwaif), Tarp Hammelherd (the slaughterer), Bogwitt (a flat head goblin) and Wingnut Sleet (the quartermaster) with very different personalities. Spooler has a very good eyesight and the first member of the Edgedancer, Goom is huge in size and very strong, Woodfish has giant ears the can hear anything that’s spoken or not, Tarp was lost in the taverns of Undertown, Bogwitt is a fierce warrior and Wingnut Sleet who is clever and sly.
It is about a sky pirate captain, named Twig, who needs to move Sanctaphrax, because a ferocious storm, called Mother Storm, needs to reach Riverrise to rejuvenate its water which then he Edgewater River flow again and Mother Storm’s energy will spread across the Edge which brings a new beginning. However the pathway is blocked by Sanctaphrax, an incredible city built on a floating rock and held in place by a great chain. And will be destroyed by Mother Storm when the water of Riverrise dries up, using up all her energy, and unable to continue the journey anymore. Twig went in a weather vortex; where meets his father who tells him that he needs to cut the anchor chain holding Sanctaphrax in place. So by losing Sanctaphrax forever, Mother Storm can reach Riverrise and The Edge can have a new beginning. He goes on a search for his crew who was in the weather vortex with him, but was separated when SOMETHING hits his ship, which causes the Edgedancer hurling them in different directions. The forceful launch has stolen his memory. He doesn’t know what happened in the weather vortex and that he needs to cut the chain that holds Sanctaphrax. In his search, he hopes the crew still have their memory and wishes to see if any of them can tell him what happened in the storm.
This is a wonderful book by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, because it teaches you about trust, because Twig needed to trust Woodfish can guide them to Riverrise, Twig said “Woodfish is our guide, Cowlquape, and we must trust him. We are in his world now” keeping a promise, because Twig promised his crew that he won’t abandon his crew and went on a dangerous journey to find them, Twig said “As their captain, I make a promise never to abandon them, come what may. If there is even the slightest chance that any of them are alive, then it is a promise I must keep” and determination because they had to be determined to find the crew and get to Riverrise, “Show me professor! Twig said excitedly. He turned to his apprentice. We’re going to find my crew, Cowlquape. To be reunited… he paused. Perhaps they will even be able to tell me about my father…” This is an incredible fantasy story with many themes and is recommended for grades four and up.
Five huge stars are what I would rate this book because this book is such a well-written book and is way, way better than Vox, another Edge chronicle series book. My personal thoughts about Midnight over Sanctaphrax, are that it suspenseful in every single chapter which doesn’t let you put the book down, full of adventure through the entire story which makes you feel like everything is happening to you and is very original in every way whether it is characters, place, animals or even food, but the author describes them so well he makes them sound so realistic so then they actually real in your mind. Also I think it is an exceptional good read if you want to have a book to read except once you start you’ll be so into it you can’t stop.
Will Twig be able to recover his memory in time? Will Sanctaphrax be destroyed forever? Will any of his crew still have their memory? What hit his ship? All questions will be answered when you continuously read this incredibly awesome book and find out!

Par Un client
This book is amazing! before I read the edge chronicles all the books I read were boring, but now I can't wait until the next edge chronicle is out.

the book is about Twig, a young sky pirate captain who has set out to find his lost crew, regain his memory and save the floating city of sanctaphrax.

I would recomend this book to anybody looking for a good read!
