Product Description

This novel is a departure for Alexander McCall Smith, who is best known for his many series of books - The Number One Ladies Detective Agency, The Isabel Dalhousie series, and 44 Scotland Street. Because of the style of those series, the writing is episodic. La's Orchestra Saves the World appears to be an individual novel, yet McCall Smith doesn't seem to have found the pacing for this book. I read a copy from Australia, so perhaps the release of the novel in North America will have had some improvements in editing. The version I read was uneven and actually had some inconsistencies that should have been caught in editing. McCall Smith's output is prolific, and my feeling is that more time should have been taken in polishing and balancing this story. The story of a small English village during WWII is a good setting for the novel, but the unevenness of the story telling (usually McCall Smith's strong point) left me less than impressed with this book.

Having read and enjoyed most of the Ladies detective series, I picked this up at the library thinking it would be good, as the inside jacket looked intriguing. I did enjoy it for the most part;I liked the descriptions of the English countryside, and the feeling of the era felt real. I wasn't fond of the cold unemotional way the author portrayed the main character,La; she seemed to lack flesh and blood and emotions. I think that might be due to a man(the author) trying to crawl into a woman's skin and presume to know how a woman feels. I felt let down towards the end of the book, I felt it all just petered out and it was not a satisfactory conclusion all. As I am writing this, i have just come to realize that i didn't really LIKE La very much, she did not have my sympathies, and perhaps she was meant to be portrayed as a cold distant fish. But I do like books better when I actually feel at one with the protagonist.
Reading it was not a waste of my time for sure, but I am glad I didn't buy the book. I think because both books took place during ww2, I expected it to be more like "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" which I loved immensely and have recommended to everyone I know that reads. "La" cannot begin to compete with that lovely little novel. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
