Product Description

From Amazon.com

"When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back,
Three from the circle, three from the track;
Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
Five will return, and one go alone."
With these mysterious words, Will Stanton discovers on his 11th birthday that he is no mere boy. He is the Sign-Seeker, last of the immortal Old Ones, destined to battle the powers of evil that trouble the land. His task is monumental: he must find and guard the six great Signs of the Light, which, when joined, will create a force strong enough to match and perhaps overcome that of the Dark. Embarking on this endeavor is dangerous as well as deeply rewarding; Will must work within a continuum of time and space much broader than he ever imagined.

Susan Cooper, in her five-title Dark Is Rising sequence, creates a world where the conflict between good and evil reaches epic proportions. She ranks with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien in her ability to deliver a moral vision in the context of breathtaking adventure. No one can stop at just one of her thrilling fantasy novels. Among many other prestigious awards, The Dark Is Rising is a Newbery Honor Book and a Carnegie Medal Honor Book. 4.0 out of 5 stars A children's favourite, Sep 21 2008
By Jack Blatant (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Dark Is Rising (Paperback)
I don't know how many people feel the same way, but I'm starting to tire of the way in which Hollywood is pillaging the books of my childhood for the next blockbuster. Peter Jackson I can deal with, because his adaptation of Tolkien's trilogy was a labour of love; I wouldn't really say the same thing about the Narnia movies. I haven't even seen the film adaptation of this book, because I still treasure the old memories and associations.

It's hard to review this book objectively, I suspect - for me, I see it through the lens of my childhood; for an adult, how can an adult judge a book meant to impart a special kind of magic for the young?

This book is my favourite of the Cooper series, although it is technically the second book in the series. It introduces Will Stanton, who goes on to play a major role in the series overall. Although some might find the plot and imagery simplistic, I find that Cooper taps into some major archetypes, and that they are enriched by Cooper's liberal drawing from Celtic and Arthurian mythology. For me, the book maintains a special kind of magic.

Book Review
Of The Dark is Rising

The Dark is Rising to me, wasn't very good. When reading it I knew that I wouldn't want to read any other of these books because of their type of writing. Though I do think that a lot of people would like this book. The one thing that I would fix if I were writing it would be to make more conflicts in the begging. As you know this book is about an eleven year old boy who has to save the world by finding the six signs of power. When reading you would think that there would be something that is trying to stop Will. I mean there is one thing that is supposed to stand in his way, the rider. Though you only meet the rider once and he doesn't come back till your half way through the book. Altogether there are supposed to be six signs and you would think that it would be hard to find them. The first sign he receives for his birthday, the next an old man gives him. The third is given to him by a young lady he knows. Then finally the fourth is found in his church. The other two he actually does fight for. The thing I liked about the book was that Will was given special powers that only the Old Ones can use. Altogether the book wasn't very good but had some high points of excitement.

1.0 out of 5 stars My first review ever, Nov 18 2009
By Kooky "Jooky" (Niagara Falls, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Dark Is Rising (Paperback)
I had to review this book because it was terrible, and I couldn't stand seeing it reviewed so well. Thankfully it is short, but I couldn't even get through it. I had to give up on it (and I NEVER give up on books either). I realized that I didn't care about any of the characters, the "Dark", or even the story in general. It seemed like a total waste of my time. It moves slowly, and the plot just seems to happen without any action or direction whatsoever. Kids may tolerate the book because it is relatively easy to follow, but I can't see them loving it. If you are looking for a simplistic, slow, story with uninteresting characters and plot, pick it up...at least it is cheap.
