PreSchool-- Snail worries more and more as his birthday approaches , but no one knows why. He finally consults Owl and reveals the problem: whereas all the other animals gave birthday parties in their homes, Snail's only home is his shell--a home far too small to hold all of his friends. Owl reasons that the whole world is Snail's garden, so "the solution is to have a Garden Party." Watercolor illustrations coax some humor from the prosaic text by picturing the animals in frenetic activity, although this also results in an unintentionally doggy-looking rabbit. Although the subject of birthdays is of great interest to small children, the premise here is overextended. --Susan H. Patron, Los Angeles Public Library
