Product Description

Product Description

The third volume in the classic story of Helen Forrester's childhood and adolescence in poverty-stricken Liverpool during the 1930s. Helen has managed to achieve a small measure of independence. At seventeen, she has fought and won two bitter battles with her parents, the first for the right to educate herself at evening classes, the second for the right to go out to work. Her parents are still as financially irresponsible as ever, wasting money while their children lack blankets, let alone proper beds, but for Helen the future is brightening as she begins to make friends her own age and to develop some social life outside the home. At twenty, still never kissed by a lover, Helen meets Harry, a strong, tall seaman, and falls in love! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling story, Sep 20 2009
By M. Wendehorst "book worm" (Toronto Canada) - See all my reviews

I have read all of Helen Forrester's biographical books
and one has to wonder how she survived. It is written honestly
and without malice for her uncaring, selfish parents.
These books need to be read by teenagers and adults who
have everything and still want more.
It's a compelling story of a neglected child growing into adulthood
in Liverpool at the time of the depression.
Read "Twopence to cross the Mersey" and "Liverpool Miss"
reading those books made me angry at her parents and in the end I had to admire Helen's spirit, her determination and her compassion for her parents. Just an awesome read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third in the inspiring series, Jul 14 2009
By K. White "whitebabe" (Calgary) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is Helen Forrester's third book in her autobiographical series, following Twopence to Cross the Mersey and Liverpool Miss. All three are excellent, inspiring books. Helen Forrester was raised in Liverpool in the most abject poverty. I cried while reading her books, but at the end I was always left feeling hopeful for her. After more hard knocks than I would have thought possible, she remained undefeated. I haven't read the fourth and last book in the series yet, but I have ordered it and can't wait for it to arrive
