Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Ben Elton's new novel High Society initially appears to be a cautionary tale about Britain today, but its vision of a society totally in thrall to criminality has elements of the visionary novel about it. Happily, the state of the nation is not (yet) quite as awful as it's rendered in this terrifying kaleidoscope. We're taken into a world in which drug use holds total sway, and the whole world essentially functions as a single criminal network. From royalty and the upper crust to drug abusers and prostitutes--right across the social spectrum--we are (in Elton's unsparing universe) plunging into a criminal world.

Elton's cast of characters is massive, but all (notably a government minister who is trying to push through a bill to legalise drugs) are etched in with maximum vividness. Interestingly, although Elton casts a cold eye across the whole of society (including an unforgiving look at the media) the final effect of the book is anything but bleak. All the trademark wit is here, along with a sense of focus that is considerably more sophisticated than anything Elton has tackled before. As a serious satirical novel (yes, there is such a thing), High Society makes an indelible mark. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From AudioFile

A crafty, convincing, and imaginative novel about the war on drugs. Partly to enhance his career, partly from serious concern, British MP Peter Padgett proposes the decriminalization of the illegal drug trade. Mixed up in the political wrangling are a drug-crazed rock star, the addicted sex slave he tries to save, a crusading drug cop being threatened by crooked colleagues, Peter's vengeful lover, and the reporter bent on Peter 's ruin. Written in both the third and first persons, the narrative presents reader Wagland special challenges, which he fields with aplomb. Though he loses focus in a few passages, in general he gives an exciting read of a worthy text. 5.0étoiles sur 5 Tommy Hanson Rules, Mars 17 2004
Par Brian Sullivan (Newport, RI USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: High Society (Paperback)
This was my first read or for that matter first exposure to Ben Elton. I was hooked in the very first paragraph, very funny and yes over the top characters. But that is what is fun about the book, a comical stereotypical handling of a very serious subject: Drugs and the possible effects of legalization of drugs. I have often re-read the exerps of the lead character Tommy Hanson the Rock Star. I am currently reading DEAD FAMOUS and will probably read STARK next. Buy HIGH SOCIETY, read it, enjoy it, good read for your next trip by airplane.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Below Elton's usual standard, Déc 26 2003

This review is from: High Society (Paperback)
High Society falls into the same trap that Elton often creates for himself: everything becomes too complicated. There's a lot of plot strands, monologues and twists, but the theme gets lost in the madness.

It's a strong theme too - drug legalisation. Events transpire in the novel that stop that avenue from being fully explored. It is fleshed out by the characters in discussion, and the reader is given an opportunity to consider the repercussions of legalisation, but ultimately Elton focuses less on this compelling issue and more on the grot, the filth and the seedy underbelly of the drug world. Given that, yes, this underworld is CREATED by virtue of drugs being illegal, it is still unfairly weighted.

The characters are not very well drawn and, in typical Ben Elton style, are way over the top. His dialogue is more universal to all the characters rather than coming from an individual voice, and some of the things that they say are so out of place (like, for example, a one liner), that it jars the reader out of the reality of the book.

I really like Ben Elton's books, but this one wasn't up to his usual standard. Try Popcorn or Dead Famous instead.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Couldn't put it down., Nov. 22 2003

I've enjoyed all of Ben Elton's books, but none so much as High Society. This tremendously well thought out book is difficult to put down. The running stories move rapidly together with amazing clarity and wit. The book follows the lives of several charactors and their relations with drugs. From the drug enslaved prostitute to the member of parliament pushing to have all drugs legalised. You'll finish this book with a mournful sense that you know the charactors stories in an intimate way. As well as hearing a commentary on the modern day war on drugs with such clarity that you feel astonished.

3.0étoiles sur 5 a missed opportunity...
Unknown to most Americans, Ben Elton is one of Britain's most successful comic writers (novels, plays, screenplays) today. Read more
