The Fleming Collection began life in 1968 as a corporate collection for Flemings Bank. Following the bank's takeover by Chase Manhattan Corporation, New York, in 2000, the collection opened its own gallery space in London-the first museum space dedicated exclusively to exhibiting Scottish art.
Scottish art-long overlooked in the context of British art-is now enjoying a splendid renaissance. This beautifully illustrated book examines over 200 works by such well-known artists as Henry Raeburn, David Wilkie, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Elizabeth Blackadder, many of which have never previously been illustrated or documented, as well as providing an invaluable history of many important but little-known Scottish artists.

Bill Smith was Keeper of Art for The Fleming Collection from 1985 to 1996. He is the author of several books on Scottish artists including D.Y. Cameron: The Visions of the Hills (1992) and Hornel: The Life & Work of Edward Atkinson Hornel (1997).
