Australia is home to over half of the world's species of monitor lizards or goannas, a total of 26 species. This text provides a comprehensive guide to those species. The book is divided into two parts: the natural history of goannas and the species accounts. In part one, information is provided on the evolution of goannas, their characteristics, habitats and conservation issues, as well as advice on the care of goannas, including practical details on breeding, keeping and feeding. Part two provides identification information on each species including distribution, ecology and captive biology. Each entry is accompanied by a distribution map and a feature box listing details of size, any subspecies, similar species, or other common names and conservation status. Colour photographs of species and their habitats are also included.

Good books on monitors are hard to come by and this is one of them. Up-to-date info and beautiful photo's (the one on the cover is almost worth the price of the book IMO) make it a must for anyone interested in these incredible dragon-like lizards.

From the magnificient and beautiful Perentie to the cute Short-Tailed Pygmy Monitor all the varanids occuring in Australia are described and illustrated. It is also a good reference for those who wish to keep them as pets.
