From Library Journal

A prolific author of historical and contemporary romances (e.g., Spirit of the Season, Delacorte, 1993), Graham here begins a new multivolume family saga. Set in Florida during the 1830s, the story follows Tara Brent, who is running from a murder charge. She meets Jarrett McKenzie, who rescues her from her pursuers by marrying her and taking her to his plantation on the Florida frontier. At first frightened by the wilderness and the natives she sees as "savages," Tara learns to love Jarrett, his home, and the people he loves. The story is predictable, and the narrative flow is often interrupted by brief vignettes of Florida history. In addition, Graham's superficially drawn characters are stereotypes of the stubborn lovers unwilling to communicate. Although this novel is not one of the author's best, expect demand based on her popularity and reputation.

From School Library Journal

YA?The turbulent life in the unsettled Florida of 1835 unfolds as Tara, running from a false accusation of murder, hastily marries Jarrett, an acquaintance who wins her in a poker game. He turns out to be wealthy plantation owner who befriends the Indians. She has trouble coping: war breaks out with the Indians, frightening her terribly. Her busy husband doesn't believe in explanations, and the newlyweds fight frequently, enjoying making up and falling helplessly in love. Their relationship is complex but characterization is realistic. Tension is relieved through subtle touches of humor especially with the pranks they play on one another. Her background remains a mystery, even to her husband, until almost the last chapter, an exciting climax that is nicely resolved. The attractive cover, the light plot, large amount of dialogue, and abundance of action make this piece of historical fiction an entertaining read.?Claudia Moore, W.T. This review is from: Runaway (Mass Market Paperback)
Heather Graham is the only author I have found to wrap you up in a story so well you can't wait to read what happens next. YOu can't wait for the next book to see how well the mackinzies survive all that is happening to them. One family fights to stay together no matter what the veiws and they fight for the women that they love.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A must for my library!!!, Nov. 22 2002

This review is from: Runaway (Mass Market Paperback)
This was one of those books that I found at the library- the cover was pretty, review was interesting, and there were lots of initials on the inside cover where others had read it. So I decided that this must be a good one. AND IT WAS!!! Never a dull moment in it. Oh, there were times the history got a little long (nothing I couldn't bare though) and other times when I could have strangled Tara for not confiding in Jarret or for lashing out at him the way she did. And just when I thought I had it figured out there was a twist that took me off into another direction. I ended up carrying about the "supporting actors and actresses" as well as Tara and Jarrett. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and am glad the lasaga continues in Captive next. I don't usually buy very many to keep - but I did this one!

2.0étoiles sur 5 Not as Great as Captive, Nov. 9 2002
Par Un client
This review is from: Runaway (Mass Market Paperback)
I didn't know about the order of Graham's Flordia seris, and I began with _Captive_ instead. After being engrossed in the book for a day, I could not wait at all to get my hands on the first book _Runaway_. After reading about their sweet relationship in _Captive_ I was couldn't wait to read more.

Sadly, _Runaway_ was a dissapointment. Tara is a narrow-minded, bratty female who makes me cringe, and Jarrett makes me twitch. It seems as if Jarette married Tara for the wrong reasons (because she caught his attention? Her hair? Her beauty?). And it is BEYOND me why and when and how they fell in love. One moment they're spatting the cruelest words to each other, and suddenly Tara says she loves him.

Also, Tara's seemingly *big* crisis, was nothing more than a mere chapter in the book to culminate. Yet another disapointment. I expected more.

Mayhap this sounds like a rant, but it was such a disapointment. I expected more of the couple. I guess they evovled very nicely between the ending of _Runaway_ and _Captive_. I gave this book a 2 because although content was not enticing, Heather Graham does know how to spin a tale in fashion. Beautiful with word usage and fire.
