3.0 out of 5 stars Ehh, it's all right but I wouldn't buy it first, Feb 11 1999
By Esther A. Paris (Cumberland, RI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book when it was hot off the press.

I've used it more for its needle gauge than any other reason. Oh, I occasionally turn to a page in the middle to look up a term that I haven't been exposed to often, and maybe have learned a new thing or two. But, this book is not a to-die-for knitter's reference by any means. It's too cursory to be that.

Yes, I keep it in my knitting bag, but often consider it to be just extra weight I should remove from my knitting bag. Like I said above, I **do** use it for the needle gauge and occasional look-up. I don't use it for inspiration or learning a complex new technique.

I strongly suggest you immediately discard the protective plastic bag it comes in. I left my book in that, left my book in the knitting bag, and left the knitting bag in the car. (None of these are unusual.) The plastic protective wrap split from temps in my car (I presume) and played havoc with my yarn. This was unbeknownst to me until I opened my knitting bag to find the book's protective plastic cover entangled with my then-current project and slicing its way through. PITCH THE COVER! A few dings on your book are worth less than your precious yarn.

If you (A) use circular needles often and need a gauge to carry around, (B) like a book for quick-look-up that gives you a handy way to refresh your mind about a little-used technique, and (C) have a litle extra money that you want to spend on knitting, then by all means buy this book. But, if you have only a little extra money to spend on yourself or a friend as a knitter's reference or want to buy a book for a beginner, then this is NOT what I would suggest you get. It's a refresher tool, not a reference manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For All Knitters!, Dec 10 2007
By Barbara "Loves to Knit" (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This knitters guide is great for the beginner, intermediate and advanced knitter. It's the perfect weight and size to fit in your knitter's bag and it's coil-bound with cardboard so it stands up beautifully so you have a handy visual reference while your hands are busy with the knitting.

The techniques are fully described with clear drawings of the steps which really help you to visualize the stitches.

In addition to the stitch descriptions, gauges, blocking, seaming, hemming, button holes, various methods of casting on and off are all covered in the book as well as yarn care. At the back is a needle gauge with actual cut-outs that you can push the needle through. This is really handy if you're not certain of a needle size. Yarn weights, lengths and needle gauges (US, metric & UK) are all covered as well in conversion charts.

This book has everything you need as a quick reference. I've had mine for years and years and I still use it all the time. Happy Knitting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to carry in your bag!, Jun 27 2004
By lesa (LaPorte, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This wonderful little flipbook is the perfect thing to carry along in your knitting bag. It is the perfect thing for looking up that pattern stitch that you never heard of, or don't understand. The book can easily be propped up as a hands free reference while you are knitting.

There is a needle size tool and a ruler for helping you check your gauge as well.

All knitters should have a handy reference book, and this is a good one. New knitters, this book covers the basics, but it is not written as a learn to knit text. This is a reference only book.
