Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

A Buddhist monk, poet and Zen master, Hanh fled his native Vietnam during the war and became a peace activist, eventually settling in France. He now has followers throughout the world. On this tapeAbased on a visit Hanh made to San FranciscoAhe answers questions about his calling and his life, stating his beliefs matter-of-factly, in heavily accented but easily understood English. The second of the two cassettes presents a recording of Hanh's appearance at Grace Cathedral, where he recited poetry, occasionally accompanied by singers, and explained his vision of the world. Sometimes he's quite funny; he says that people should breathe deeply and meditate when they hear the ringing of a phone, rather than immediately answering it. His poetry usually deals with life trials such as the rape and murder of villagers. He is an articulate and emotional speaker, but this audio book will appeal primarily to people who are already familiar with Hanh's work, since those listening to Hanh for the first time may find this disjointed audio an underwhelming introduction to the Zen master. Based on the 1993 Parallax hardcover. (Dec. 2000)

From AudioFile

Thich Nhat Hanh is a well-known Vietnamese Zen master whose devotion to truth is so profound that it transcends the confines of Buddhism, or any religious tradition for that matter. Half of this program consists of a sensitive studio interview while the second half captures the holy man speaking and reading his poetry at a San Francisco church. In the latter segment, we also hear songs in Vietnamese and English that are beautiful and mesmerizing. Combined with the Thich Nhat Hanh's peaceful voice, they move the listener into a slower mode of being. This powerful program will influence people in ways that can't be explained. 5.0 out of 5 stars Everything is Here, Mar 6 2004

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
As many of us may (or may not) be aware, Nhat Hanh is at once a renowned Buddhist monk, a poet, and activist for peace; especially peace sought after during war time. This particular book brings together a collection of 100+ poems he has written and orated over 40 years. Each one gives the reader a glimpse into the very heart of this real life bodhisattva. Call Me By My True Names is perhaps one of his most profound and important, for it penetrates one's dualistic mode of thinking to the point of acknowledging all nature is within my own nature. True understanding stems from realizing there is no other in a traditional sense. What there should only be is, "How can I help this world?" Call Me By My True Names is awe-inspiring, one of the most powerful texts on interconnection and being I've ever happened to read. And simple, so clear.

This book covers practically every aspect of a spiritual life in it's contents, and it is my wish you will buy it. It should be on all beings shelves, for it's prose is delivered deep from the heart of a modern bodhisattva.

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice of Buddha, Oct 31 2003

(REAL NAME)
This book is something special. Call me by my true names is more than a collection of poems by some crusty old Zen guy. The author's clarity and enlightening style have cut through my muddy mind like a knife through butter. I sit here covered in Goosebumps because Thich Nhat Hahn's poetry resonates with the voice of Buddha.

Call me by my true names is nothing short of spectacular.
