Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In this sequel to the Stoker-winning The Rising (2003), Keene ingeniously asks, if human corpses can be reanimated, why not dead dogs, rats, sparrows, goldfish, etc.? His other innovation is the news that the zombie swarm is inhabited by demons who are angry at God for trying to exile them in the Void. They want to get revenge by killing everything on Earth, and they are numerous, clever and indestructible enough to accomplish the task. Opposing the demon-zombies are a few living survivors, chiefly an ex-hooker, a young father and his little boy. Finding no shelter elsewhere, they wind up in a fortified Manhattan skyscraper, commanded by an old millionaire who's certain he can outlast any attack. Keene does a fine job keeping the mechanics of the siege clear, while switching viewpoints among his large cast of characters. He's also inventive in imagining ways the human body can be disassembled, with vivid descriptions of torn flesh and spraying fluids. After a while, though, the relentless dread becomes tiresome. Reading this book is like being trapped in a long, gory, unwinnable video game. (June)

Trapped inside a fortified skyscraper, a handful of survivors prepare to make their last stand against an unstoppable, undying enemy. With every hour their chances diminish and their numbers dwindle, while the numbers of the dead can only rise. Because sooner or later, everything dies. And then it comes back, ready to kill

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too much ..., April 3 2008
By P. Mcsweeney "Singer" (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read City of the Dead directly after the Rising. That may have been a mistake. While having enjoyed both books, I found that City of the Dead was a little too highly charged. I was exhausted from reading it - I must be getting old. I found that the pace of the Rising was more reasonable. CotD was virtually non-stop. While it's good to end a chapter with a bit of suspense, doing this with virtually every chapter was too much for my liking.

Brian Keene writes well, spins a good yearn and takes the time to develop his characters (unlike all-too-many authors in this genre).

The ending ... what can I say? Keene seems to prefer to leave the reader a little stunned and confused. A refreshing change. It lets me know that I can take nothing for granted with this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just call me a "Keene-er", Jul 4 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This follow up to Brian Keene's "The Rising" is one of he simgle best horror novels that I have ever read. This book is so brutally graphic and scarey, that I was actually sweating with terror as I was reading it. It's not often that I come across anything that actually gets my heart racing, but Keene's book certainly did just that, and HOW!
The story picks up exacty where the Rising left us all hanging, and steadily takes off at a fast burning pace that never lets up. Bassically, the story is all about Jim and his crew finding a skyscraper full of living survivors, being governed by a rich nut-job with a savior complex. Needless to say, the zombies re marching on the humans, the humans are hiding and dying by the bucket-load, and the twists and turns that Keene throws out are freakin amazing!
Congrats, and Thx Brian Keene, keep writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad book, April 9 2007
By Joao Mascarenhas (Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The story is so ridicule that couldn't believe what i was reading. Talking zombies are always boring, but this is not the worst, when you have talking and zombie animals.. when a bunch of demons "invade" earth to get inside rotten corpses it all gets so stupid that i cannot say anyhting good about this book. If you like horror, zombies and apocalypse stories avoid this at all cost. Amazon has hundreds of great books so don't waste your money with this one.
