I am a big fan of the Stargate Atlantis TV series and it was an easy jump to the novels since I was already familiar with the characters. "Stargate Atlantis: Casualities of War" has become one of my favourite novels in this series.

This one in particular tugged at my heart, in regards to the character Colonel Sheppard. It revealed a surprising deeper emotional side to John Sheppard that is rarely seen. I was in awe by his courage and struggle as a leader in a fragile situation, and I felt more connected to him than ever before.

The other characters, such as Ronon Dex, were also more developed in terms of their personality which provided a much more personal and closer bond.

The overall story is about the team being caught in the middle of a war between two cities while searching for ancient technology on the planet. Their presence causes an sharp increase in an already tense situation which fuels paranoia and distrust amongst the people. As a result, the team is placed in grave danger.

Even after they discover the awful truth about the technology, they are unable to convince the people to stop using it. Their pleas and intention to help both sides fall on deaf ears. As the team is separated, both John and Elizabeth question their ability to resolve the situation. It nearly tears John apart when he fails to be a strong leader during a volatile mission and he has to search within himself to find a way out.

I loved this novel, I could not put in down. When I did finally finish it, I was very proud of it and thrilled for reading it.
