Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Urban mercenary Repairman Jack is back after a long hiatus, but Wilson's work-for-hire outlaw has clearly lost his edge since his last novel-length adventure, The Tomb (1984). Although still a lean and mean equalizer who makes his living "fixing" personal injustices, he has developed a soft spot for the kind of sympathetic victim that no conscientious defender could refuse. This new escapade pairs him with Alicia Clayton, head of a pediatric AIDS clinic in Manhattan, who has inherited a valuable Murray Hill townhouse from her estranged father. Alicia would love to destroy the building and with it memories of childhood sexual abuse she suffered there, but she is prevented by her slimy half-brother, Thomas, who offers to buy the house for an outrageous sum of money and whom she suspects is responsible for the violent deaths of everyone she hires to dispose of it. Jack eventually teases out the intricate thread that binds Thomas, his secret Saudi Arabian backers, an enigmatic Japanese spy and Alicia's secret shame to the property, but not without considerable help from fortuitous coincidences, lucky deductions and unlikely motives. Wilson (Deep as the Marrow) tries to prop up the shaky logic of his tale with preachy attacks against drug abuse, child pornography and parental irresponsibility, but these issues are too weighty for his pulpy villains and strained plot to bear. Jack still thrills with cliffhanger escapes and ingenious snares for the blundering bad guys, but he emerges from this novel less a hero than a hostage to its social consciousness.

From Library Journal

Repairman Jack is back. The hero of Wilson's The Tomb, a New York Times best seller in 1984, is hired to fix a problem for Dr. Alicia Clayton: She's inherited a house she wants destroyed, given its dark past, but someone is getting in her way.

5.0 out of 5 stars REPAIRMAN JACK - PART OF THE ADVERSARY CYCLE!!!!!, Nov 6 2003
By Scott Rachui - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I agree with the other reviews that the Repairman Jack stories are some of the best out there today. But everyone seems to reference 'The Tomb' as Repairman Jack's only story to precede Legacies. Hasn't anyone ever heard of 'NightWorld'? 'Nightworld' was the conclusion to F Paul Wilson's multi-part saga entitled 'The Adversary' about an eternal war between Good and Evil. It includes the following stories: 1. The Keep 2. The Tomb 3. The Touch 4. Reborn 5. Reprisal 6. Nightworld. 'The Tomb' and 'Nightworld' are the only ones with Repairman Jack in them, but the whole series is truly amazing and worth everyone's immediate attention. Plus the fact that Nightworld won't make much sense without reading all 5 of the previous stories, and also the fact that the events in 'Nightworld' bring to conclusion several of the things left hanging in 'The Tomb'. Every Repairman Jack story is extremely worthwhile reading, but to read Repairman Jack without reading the larger 'Adversary' cycle means you're missing the core of what the Repairman Jack stories are all about (Conspiracies and Hosts being the most obvious examples).

5.0 out of 5 stars JACK IS BACK!!!, Jul 9 2003
By Daniel V. Reilly (Upstate New York, United States) - See all my reviews
Legacies marks the return of urban mercenary Repairman Jack, who first appeared in F. Paul Wilson's magnificent horror/action novel The Tomb. Got a problem you can't (Or won't...) go to the Police with? For a small fee, Jack could be the solution to all of your problems...

Alicia Clayton has just been hit with a bombshell: The Father she hasn't spoken to since she turned 18 has just died in a plane crash, and she's inherited the family home. Her step-brother, totally cut out of the will, is naturally a little ticked off. But could he possibly be responsible for the "Accidental" death of Alicia's Lawyer? Where is he getting the money for the Million-Dollar offers he's making for the house? Could the house hold a secret worth killing for...? And what went on there that made Alicia swear never to set foot in it again? With a little luck, Jack and Alicia may just get the answers...

Wilson does his usual excellent job, writing a briskly paced page-turner. I really hated to put the book down, and I finished it in record time. Jack is a GREAT hero, and he's got some amazing three-dimensional villains to contend with here. Unlike Jack's previous adventure in The Tomb, Legacies is straight crime-drama, so readers looking for the Horror elements present in The Tomb may be disappointed for a minute...At least until they get [drawn] into the mystery.
