This is hands down the best translation of Oku no Hosomichi in English, but as if that wasn't enough, this edition is BEAUTIFULLY illustrated by Miyata Masayuki, and includes the original Japanese, along with necessary contextual footnotes. That The Narrow Road to Oku is a profound work of literary significance goes without saying.

"Many of the men of old died on the road, and I too for years past have been stirred by the sight of a solitary cloud drifting with the wind to ceaseless thoughts of roaming.... The guardian spririts of the road beckoned, and I could not settle down to work."

This book is a must have for any fan of Kiri-E, or Masayuki Miyata. His illustrations are beautiful...it is easy to see why he has become one of Japans modern masters of this traditional artform. Great Stuff!

If anyone adores the simple beauty and truth of haiku, this is the text to own. Not only are the Japanese characters printed alongside the inquisitive English translations, but the accompanying collages are breathtaking interpretations of the works. The entire book is a work of art.
