Review

Beautifully executed in the Latin storytelling tradition of magic realism, Like Water for Chocolate is a romantic drama that ultimately falls back into a Cinderella myth. Director Alfonso Arau shows the domestic chores and duties of the ranch with a commonplace realism, occasionally lapsing into fantasy sequences for the surreal events that are being cooked up. In one instance, the long-suffering Tita (Lumi Cavazos) rides away with a mile-long blanket dragging behind her, a product of her lovesick nights spent knitting. The mother is appropriately wicked, as is the sister, and Tita views her prince charming, Pedro (Mario Leonardi), as the only escape from her lifelong servitude. Like the oven-warmed kitchen where most of the action is set, the photography is warm and glowing. The connection between food and sex is well developed, in several banquets and dinners proving both memorable and humorous. Filled with characters simmering with passion and jealousy, Like Water for Chocolate lives up to its title, which refers to a method of making hot cocoa by adding chocolate to boiling water. Although heavier topics such as death, ghosts, and revolutionary war arise, the story is overall lighthearted and adheres to Hollywood romantic sensibilities. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

2.0 out of 5 stars This movie is "erotic and delectable"?, Dec 5 2008

This review is from: Like Water for Chocolate (DVD)
The story opens on a Mexican rancho in 1910, as Tita is being born. Her harsh mother proclaims that the girl will never marry, but will stay at home and care for her mother all her life, and the little girl is relegated to the kitchen. When Tita grows up, she falls in love with handsome Pedro; he cannot marry her so he marries her sister just to be close to his beloved, who is now the family cook.

I know this was a favorite of the critics when it came out, so I can only assume that something was lost in the translation for me, because I don't see the appeal or the greatness of this movie at all. To me, the actors seemed bland and amateurish, the scenes were choppy and poorly photographed, and story couldn't decide if it was a real love story or a magical fantasy. The meaning of the title was never explained and the last scene was so strange it was ridiculous.

I really expected to like this movie, but found it a low-budget, art house-wannabe. In Spanish with English subtitles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Food for your heart and soul, Jun 24 2007

This review is from: Like Water for Chocolate (DVD)
When I was in college, I majored in Fashion Merchandising Mgt., and as part of one of my Read/Writing WKSHP courses, I had to read this book. After reading it, I realized it was a wonderful book. I don't know what I had done with book but that was back in 1994. I was at the library one day and I spotted it and rented it out. It was not my first time seeing it either. The movie is sensual, playful, and extremely evocative. It helps that the source material, Laura Esquivel's novel, is also exquisite and unusual (using recipes as a structural device, much in the way diary entries have traditionally done). Alfonso Arau visualizes the novel brilliantly; this was one rare case where the literary work and the film are complementary instead of in competition. Ironic, then, that this bittersweet romance of almost mythic emotional force came from the collaboration of Esquivel and Arau, who are divorced.

This film is about Tia, a Mexican girl who wants to marry a boy named Pedro. Her only problem -- and it's a bad one -- is her mother, Mama Elena. Mama Elena upholds an old family tradition where the youngest daughter is to stay home and take care of her mother. It's a good idea in theory, but in practice somebody obviously failed to consider what might happen to the youngest daughter when the mother dies. Because Mama Elena insists that Pedro marry Rosaura and not Tita, Pedro does marry Rosaura -- but only to be near Tita. Tita has to cook the wedding feast, and her tears fall into the batter of the wedding cake. And the magic begins.

The two primary actresses are excellent. I really wanted Tita to find happiness -- especially with Pedro. As for Mama Elena, I hated her enough to want to strangle her. Kudos to the actress who played her for creating such a despicable part. The actor who played Pedro was acceptable, but he didn't have that much to do. Of course, it is a film where women are the most important characters, so maybe that's why the actor didn't have much to do. After watching this movie you will realize that "Like Water for Chocolate" is more than a movie, it's an experience. In all the aspects it's a great love story with culture and spice!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing body of work, May 24 2003

(REAL NAME)
I will admit at the outset that romance style films rarely interest me.

That being said, this film is over the top as far as "reality." Regardless of the lack of "reality," it is one of the best films on the market.

Within the span of viewing, we are charmed, saddened, humored, and basically brought into a fantastical world of magic, culture and food.

This is a great "date" movie and one that will charm you with repeated viewings. Highly recommended and well worth the money.
