Product Description

From Amazon.com

Fire Dance is the follow-up to Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek's fruitful collaboration on Suleyman the Magnificent. But while that album hewed closer to traditional Turkish forms, Fire Dance extends Tekbilek's Turkish music heritage into a more wide-ranging landscape. Keane is more a partner than producer here, adding his own deft acoustic guitar playing to Tekbilek's arsenal of Middle Eastern instruments, which includes the ney, kaval, baglama, zurna, and percussion. By setting these instruments in rich synthesizer and percussion orchestrations, Keane creates a Middle Eastern fusion whether they are playing the Persian traditional song, "O lan Boyun," or the atmospheric expanses of Keane's "Desert Twilight." The latter piece begins with Keane's decidedly American-style acoustic guitar, full of open expanses before Tekbilek enters with his mournful ney flute. While Suleyman the Magnificent updated and rearranged traditional Turkish music, Fire Dance posits a more modern and original fusion that embraces not only the sounds of greater North Africa, Persia, and the Middle East, but also a Western sensibility of mood and orchestration. --John Diliberto

5.0 out of 5 stars A Collaboration From Very Different Worlds, Oct 4 2001
By Lynden C. Rodriguez "Lynden Rodriguez" (San Bernardino, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My sister introduced me to Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek some time back with a CD called "Whirling." I became so entranced that I could not resist another: Fire Dance! This CD, along with a very few others, has become a mainstay in my daily listening fare.

Fire Dance is a collaboration of two masters musicians from very different world. Brian Keane is a guitarist, composer, and award winning producer, scoring more than 40 films. His first collaboration with Tekbilek was the soundtrack to Suleyman the Magnificent. Fire Dance is a natural progression from Suleyman. It blends Middle Eastern and North African instruments with synthesizers, guitar, and sophisticated orchestrations. The focus of Fire Dance expands to include music from North Africa, Egypt, and other Middle Eastern and Arabic sources. In Fire Dance you will find a unique recording embracing many moods. Yet it is energetic and meditative, mystical and joyous. It transports the listener to far away lands and traditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for any middle eastern dance student, Feb 7 2001
By Annette C. Dietz (Boca Raton, FL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a fabulous album for Middle Eastern dance warm-ups and practice. It has a variety of styles and tempos: slow songs for practicing flowing arms and undulations, fast songs for working on hip articulation and shimmies. I had this on cassette tape for years and wore it out before buying the CD. Some of my dance CD purchases tend to be trendy, whatever is popular at the moment, but this is a CD I keep listening to when the others have lost their limited appeal.

I am someone who listens to a lot of middle eastern and Ancient Egypt music, both Traditional and New Age. I would have to recommend this CD for anyone into Ancient Egyptian sounds, or Middle Eastern Music. It is my favorite CD at the moment, and I listen to it daily. Highly recommended!
