5.0 out of 5 stars Baroque drama and excitement galore!, Mar 28 2000
By T. McAuley (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The track which starts the CD is a thrill! The Magnificat primi toni is played with great understanding and some passion (as well as, at times, the necessary restraint--this music could carry the performer into the netherworld if they're not somewhat disciplined--of course the listener is free to take that trip). The four tracks by Sweelinck are, in comparison, of a simpler character, not exciting, but full of beautiful melodic ideas and very listenable nonetheless. The remaining tracks are Buxtehude Paradise, ending with the WONDERFUL and memorable Ciacona in E minor, one of the master's basso ostinato pieces (it may sound "heavy" to a novice, but keep listening, you'll be glad you did).
