4.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Pearl!, May 30 2003
These historical recordings are transferred from the original 78s recorded in the late '30s and early '40s. Pearl has done a wonderful job with the transfers, leaving in just enough crackle to remind you you're listening to something almost seventy years old. Koussevitzky did more for American musicthan perhaps any other conductor, and these recordings rival the cold digital recordings of to-day. If you're like me, you'll love this disc, but if you are picky about high fidelity, there are other recordings out there -- for the Copland and Harris' Third, try Bernstein's Sony-era recordings. I, for one, treasure this disc and owe a profound debt of gratitude to Pearl.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great performance, poor sound, Jul 30 2000
By Charles Taylor (Warner Robins, GA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This disc is made from old '78 discs and the sound is pretty poor. There are versions of most of these pieces on other discs which are just as good or better than the performances here. The exception is the Roy Harris Symphony No. 1. A Louisville Orchestra recording has been made available, but, even considering the poor sound, this is better by far. For Harris fanatics, like me, it is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars mind-boggling, Mar 28 2000
By A Customer
I listened to this CD last week. It was about 11pm.And what a revelation! I was totally absorbed by the music. I stopped my desk work to listen to it. Though the pieces were recorded between 1938 to 1946, the power of the conductor makes you forget the less than perfect sonics. I liked the whole CD from Copland`s A.Spring to Sousa`s famous Stars and Stars March. The music comes alive through crisp rhythms and wonderful tension. Reminds you of Stokowski and Mengelberg. Highly recommended.
