Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Another Oliver Stone film hailed by many as some sort of genius. Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor was brought in to helm the soundtrack. He shows a gift for choosing diverse, if somewhat disparate musicians, running the gamut from Patsy Cline to Lard. It's a nice collection, if a little wanting for a thematic centre. Cowboy Junkies' version of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" is simply awesome, and Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, and Leonard Cohen lend superstar firepower, even if the songs are available elsewhere. NIN's own "Something I Can Never Have," previously heard on Pretty Hate Machine, is the most overt attempt at what Reznor was hoping to capture. It's Pulp Fiction for the schizophrenic Gen X'ers. --Scott Wilson

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks ever, but..., April 13 2004
The reason this gets 4 stars, as opposed to the full 5 that it may deserve, is that I felt the album would have been greatly improved had it been released in a 2-disc format...even if only as a Limited Edition. The reason for this is simple...NBK had over 60 songs in it. And while 27 tracks is great in terms of a CD, it seems a bit truncated when one considers that less than half of the songs in the movie made it to the soundtrack album. And since the film itself was so reliant on music, it seems odd that they didn't release a lengthier version of the soundtrack...which would give a perfect picture of the film's mood, even to someone who had never seen it. The music in the film is, after all, practically omnipresent.

Had the NBK soundtrack gotten a Limited release as a 2-disc set, that version of the album would get a full 5-star rating from me. The album, even as it is, stands as one of the greatest (and most eclectic) film soundtracks ever assembled. A lot of the great songs used in the film found their way onto this CD...but some of them failed to show up there. And while that's a bit disappointing, this is still a fine aesthetic journey into the heart of one of the best (and darkest) satires on American culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars BORN BAD but What a Great Soundtrack & Movie!, April 1 2004
By Sheila Chilcote-Collins "Sheila Renee Chilcot... (Collinswood, Van Wert, OH USA) - See all my reviews

Top soundtrack (beware EXPLICIT lyrics) Great NIN titles PLUS my FAVE "Sweet Jane" by Cowboy Junkies. Dr. Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, & Leonard Cohen are also featured. You even get Juliet Lewis singing "Born Bad" in her jail cell. Weird mix of music.
Even some Dylan and Patsy Cline... How could you go wrong?

5.0 out of 5 stars A soundtrack that outweighs the film it is based on, Feb 6 2004
By M. Tefer "matt" (MN, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first time I wanted to discover more about Nine Inch Nails, I purchased Natural Born Killers soundtrack. Needless to say I was not dissappointed. This was because the NBK soundtrack contained the enormous 1994 hit called "Burn". Without question, it is one of the groups best and most invigorating tracks. Chris Vrenna's assistance as a drummer proved himself as invaluable when it came to building a consistent rhythm.

Since '94 was a huge year for the group, it's surprising why singer Trent Reznor did not place "burn" onto the album "the downward spiral" (possibly due to it's singular concept regarding insanity rather than anger and despair). The same incident occurred with Reznor's hit "dead souls" realeased on "The Crow" soundtrack which was released in march.

Not only was NIN on there, but Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, and The Dogg pound. Reznor, having produced the soundtrack, did a great job of venting the insanity of the film . . . even more so then Oliver Stone did through directing the bizarre movie itself.

The NBK soundtrack is not without it's flaws. It's definately very consistent but sometimes the continuity is off base. It can jump you from rock bands like Lard to Patti Smith in seconds. Sometimes the film audio fragments tend to disrupt the listen too. This said, Reznor never the less, assembled a solid soundtrack which is well worth the price for the nine inch nails song "Burn" and peter gabriel's "Taboo" if nothing else.
