Product Description

Amazon.com essential recording

With this 1978 LP, Warren Zevon stepped forward as something of the dark prince of California. Like fellow Southern California outcast Randy Newman, Zevon achieved some fame, albeit not what his talent would have earned him had he written songs more like his mellower pal Jackson Browne and a little less like Jack the Ripper in a convertible. Fascinated with bloodthirsty antiheroes, Zevon wrote with the flair of a desperately bright pulp writer and summoned images of mutilated mercenaries ("Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner"), pampered bad boys ("Lawyers, Guns and Money"), helpless sickos (the title track), and, of course, feral Chinese-food fiends ("Werewolves of London"). Excitable Boy's 1976 predecessor (Warren Zevon) may be a more consistent album, but this is the one that put Zevon in the public consciousness as someone to keep an eye on--for protection as well as promise. --Steven Stolder

5.0 out of 5 stars My Introduction to Warren:), Feb 20 2004
By A. McCusker "Ed fan" (from Baltimore) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am ashamed to say...I'd never heard of Warren Zevon. I know a sacrelidge at best:) A buddy of mine and I were talking. "Tenderness on the Block" came up and I mentioned how that was on my "to find" list. He introduced me to Warren's version..I was blown away to say the least. This led me to buy " Excitable Boy".
I love this album..it has such diversity in it...seriousness, fun, depth and such remarkable talent. It is a true shame to hear of his
passing. I am a new fan..but sad none the less:) My personal faves on a lighter note....Lawyers, Guns and Money, Tenderness on the Block, Nighttime in the Switchingyard, Veracruz and Accidently like a Martyr....Classic Zevon

White Album. Beggar's Banquet. Sergeant Pepper. Exile on Main Street. Let it Bleed. Blonde on Blonde. Highway 61 Revisited. Born to Run. Deja Vu. Workingman's Dead. Live at the Fillmore East. Worthy contenders all. They all bow to Zevon.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Underatted Gem, Oct 10 2003

Quite a range on this Exciteable Boy release by the late Warren Zevon. Catchy Rockers Werewolves of London, Lawyers, Guns, and Money and Exciteable Boy are certainly ear-catching. In the same sense, Veracruz and Johnny Strikes Up The Band are indeed long on catchy lyrics. And you just got to love the funky Nightime In The Switching Yard.

Very distinct instrumental touches especially from the keyboards. The vocal harmonies are quite good as well. Yes, this is a complete package by the Z Man as it earns the full five stars.
