Product Description

From Amazon.com

This two-record set on one CD collects 16 Paul Simon hits from his solo career after Simon & Garfunkel without much rhyme or reason. The selections are not in chronological order and several of the cuts are oddly chosen. Those minor points aside, there are some landmark works presented on these discs. "Hearts and Bones" is a brilliant depiction of a crumbling love affair, while "Slip Slidin' Away" uncovers the hurt of divorce and middle age with a groove that's pure mid-'70s decadent. Simon's infatuation with rhythm is all over the place, from the reggae of "Mother and Child Reunion" to the South African bounce of "You Can Call Me Al." --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Simon's ultimate solo compilation, Jan 22 2004
By andy8047 (Nokomis,Florida) - See all my reviews
The title of this album was a lyric from TRAIN IN THE DISTANCE,a HEARTS AND BONES track. Here is the ultimate compilation of Paul Simon's solo hit songs. Take note that Art Garfunkel is not heard anywhere on this album. From Simon's self-titled debut are MOTHER AND CHILD REUNION and ME AND JULIO DOWN BY THE SCHOOLYARD. From THERE GOES RHYMIN' SIMON is SOMETHING SO RIGHT,ST. JUDY'S COMET,LOVES ME LIKE A ROCK and KODACHROME,which is a trademark for Kodak's color film. From STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS is the title track,HAVE A GOOD TIME and FIFTY WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER. SLIP SLIDIN' AWAY was a hit from '77. That would have been an excellent Simon & Garfunkel recording, which the duo did record in '81 for THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK. All the aforementioned hits were originally released on Columbia records,Simon's label from his S&G days. Songs from the Warner Bros. era,the label he still records on today, are from the 1980 movie soundtrack ONE TRICK PONY,LATE IN THE EVENING. Other HEARTS AND BONES(released in '83) tracks are the title track and RENE AND GEORGETTE MAGRUITE WITH THEIR DOG AFTER THE WAR. From 1986's GRACELAND are the megahit YOU CAN CALL ME AL and DIAMONDS ON THE SOLES OF HER SHOES.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite folk, reggae and world music flavors, Jan 22 2004
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This great album documents Paul Simon's solo career post Simon & Garfunkel up to and including his 1986 masterpiece Graceland. It demonstrates his delightful variety of styles, from the bouncy reggae of Mother and Child Reunion and Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard through the witty pop of 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover to the lilting South African grooves of Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes and You Can Call Me Al.

These are exquisite songs with poetic lyrics and engaging melodies. Besides the aforementioned tracks, my favorites include the hits Loves Me Like A Rock, Kodachrome and the beautiful Late In The Evening. Not all of these were released as singles but they're all quality songs demonstrating the rich diversity of Simon's solo output.

Simon's willingness to experiment with world music beats probably goes back to El Condor Pasa. It found a successful expression in Reunion and Julio, eventually leading to his very best work like Graceland. This sets him apart from most singer/songwriters or folkies with their roots in the 1960s. Negotiations And Love Songs offers the highlights from 15 years of this legendary singer and composer, providing a very inspiring listening experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Greatest Hits Compilation, Nov 24 2003
By S. Heffer "argon78" (West Babylon, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Back in 1977 or 1978 or so, when I was about 8 years old, my dad gave me a Paul Simon greatest hits compilation album entitled, "Paul Simon's Greatest Hits, etc." This album is nowhere to be found on CD, but this "Negotiations and Love Songs" album comes somewhat close. At any rate, the "Greatest Hits, etc." album made me a lifelong Paul Simon fan, so I have all these songs from other sources, even if the songs post 1978 or so didn't appear on "Greatest Hits, etc."

I look at the track listing here and am amazed that even though I might have deleted a couple here or there or added a few in places, almost everything here is absolutely great. From the pretty and poignant reggae-fied "Mother and Child Reunion", to the fun "Me And Julio Down By the Schoolyard", to the slick "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", to the absolutely beautiful "Something So Right" (My wife and I made this our first dance at our wedding...) and "Still Crazy After All These Years", and of course "Slip, Slidin' Away" with its heartwrenching lyrics, great tune and wonderful harmonies (from the Oak Ridge Boys, I believe....) have been favorites of mine since I've been into music (late '70s...). The other songs here are also great! I've always loved "Late In The Evening", a rollicking song with great brass runs, the bittersweet "Train In The Distance", and even the songs from the "Graceland" album are great.

I don't know if including different songs or deleting others would have made this album any better. There are few songs by Paul Simon that I really don't like and most I really, really like. It is too bad that there doesn't seem to be anywhere on CD that I know of that contains the fun, albeit lightweight "Stranded In A Limousine" which was found on the "Greatest Hits, etc." album....Just about every song is excellent on this compilation! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
